snap judgements
My gut reactions to the moves:

Congrats to the Cubbies for making sure Pierre did not land in the Bronx.  Congrats to the Marlins on the conclusion of Fire Sale #2: Vegas Edition.

Dewon Brazelton in PETCO, good move for both teams.  If you play fantasy, take Brazelton with a late round pick, he will perform well in the Litter Box.  Side note here, this confirms that Huff is on the block in Tampa, his stock is lower than a year ago, could our Gemini Warriors make a run for him?

Welcom back to the AL Central Mark Redman.  Is this his 8th team now?

LaTroy Hawkins for Steve Kline?  Wow did Balto just get taken.  Steve Kline has a big contract, but he's a great lefty.

Mazzone
Don't forget, Baltimore has Leo Mazonne now.  Hawk has always had great stuff, and ever since he left the last team he was on with a really good pitching coach (Rick Anderson), he hasn't been as good.  I bet he'll be just fine with Baltimore.

Hawkins Usage
Dusty Baker (and then Alou) insisted on trotting out Hawkins in the 9th inning, when history has shown that he's a much better 7th & 8th inning pitcher.  If Balt uses him right, he should be fine.  But if they make the mistake of using him as a closer...well, at least the games will be more interesting...

Ironically enough...
You make an update like this, and then, BAM!

Soriano is flipped to Washington
Overbay heads north to Toronto, missing Danny Kolb by hours
Hoffman resigns with San Diego
Wickman re-ups with Cleveland

It just keeps coming.

Soriano deal
I find the Soriano trade humorous on a number of levels.

First off, the rumor is that the Nats plan to move Soriano to the outfield.  So they traded outfielder Wilkerson, a career .817 OPS hitter, for the more expensive Soriano, a career .820 OPS hitter.  Oh, and they tossed in Sledge and a PTBNL.  Makes perfect sense to me.

Secondly, the Rangers had the third highest team OPS in the majors last season, but their pitching is just awful.  So they flip Soriano for . . . more hitting.  Brilliant!

indeed
Seriously, how is this a better deal than Lohse, a middling prospect, and PTBNL???

while wilkerson is a very good player, when you are hard up for pitching... this deal just seems a waste, or a salary dump

Texas
I've been wondering what the philosophy is down in Arlington for quite a while now.  Seems like they're a bit out to lunch.

by CarterHayes on Dec 8, 2005 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

Well...
Wilkerson is better, younger, and cheaper than Soriano.  Plus, they got two other essentially no salary players.

Now the Rangers have more hitters to try to make trades with, or they just have more hitting for less money.  Wouldn't you do that if you could?

The money they save in this deal could wind up helping them get pitching.  Perhaps they will emerge as a darkhorse candidate for Millwood's services?  Who knows.  We do know that this was a great deal for them.
