Around SBN: MLB Trade Deadline: Phils, Astros complete Roy Oswalt deal

Hunter

The Star Tribune is reporting that the Twins picked up Hunter's option for '07.  http://www.startribune.com/509/story/733653.html
What is everyone's view on this?  Do the Twins then come up with a long term deal over the winter that Hunter has asked for?  If they do give him a 3-4 year deal, how long before Hunter needs to move to right/left field due to his decreasing range in center?

Long Deal
I'd onyl liek a longer deal if it were VERY cheep, around 4-6 million over the deal, and we were ready to trade him in a year or two.

He'll be asking for the extension, but unless we get 7 million at least taken off the contrat this year to sign another player, I don't think it is worth it at all.

no trade clause
Does anyone have a good understanding of no trade clauses?  I know Hunter has one now, but if I remember correctly there are 5 teams he can list that he would be willing to be traded to.  Is that correct?  If Hunter were to get a long term deal and say, just for a topic of conversation, his range drops more and more and his hitting falters, can we trade him if he has that clause in place?

As listed at Cot's Contracts...
limited no-trade clause allowing Hunter to block deals to Boston, Chicago Cubs, Detroit, Tampa Bay & Toronto

That's kind of a weird list, but there you go.

It's
t seems like it is teams that really sucked at the time, at least for Cubs, Detroit and Tampa.  I don't know what the hating on Toronto and Boston is.  I guess he think they'll never pass the Yankees...

Boston would be one team we'd trade him too, but so would LA or some other people...

Wont be an issue unless we give an extension.

Boston
is probally because that's where he hurt his leg and I think Minnesota is as far north as hunter would want to go Although isn't Toronto south of the TC's?

Umm
H signed the contract years before he hurt his leg...

He
Can change the teams after the year ends.

oops
My bad, for some stupid reason I had thought the 5 teams were teams he'd agree to be traded to.  My misunderstanding.

No Trade clauses
Usually just means that if YOU decide to trade him to another team, he can renegotiate with YOU and/or the OTHER TEAM before the trade is made, or outright reject it if $$$ aren't added.

Of course, sometimes, the promise of a post-season and possible World Championship is worth more than money, especially if your present team is wallowing around the 100-loss level.

No-trade clause
He waived it for Boston, but reiterated it for the Cubs (Ivy), Detroit (Grand Canyon) Tampa (Sucky team on turf), Toronto (Canadian team on hard turf).
Joe Mauer for MVP.

That's kind of weird...
...that he wouldn't want to play in Detroit because of the field.  I would think that'd be a CF'ers paradise with all of that room to play in.  A terrific defensive CF can be a lot more valuable in Detroit or San Diego than in places with smaller confines.

The other ones definitely make sense, though.

Deroit a dream outfield for a 27yrold Hunter
But a 32 year old Hunter whose range is starting to evaporate might get "exposed" as less than a super hero if he were to play in that outfield. But it might have just as much to do with the fact that before this year Detroit SUCKED ASS as a team and still sucks some major ass as a city in which to live. (no offense to all of you unlucky enough to live in detroit)

I suspect Montana's right ...
Detroit is on the list because they were lousy at the time & Torii really had no idea they'd get better so soon.

Fields
I'm pretty sure Boston and Cubs are because of Fenway and Wrigley. I think he waived Boston for their recent success.

I also wonder if his range will come back some next year. I really think its more his foot than his age. Low thirties is too young for it to be his speed from slow muscles holding him back. I think IF his foot actually heals he'll get the range back.

They're have been plenty of great mid-late thirties outfielders.

I agree
Im hopefull that he'll be able to heal much better now that he's further from his injury.  If we all recall, earleir this season, before he got hurt again, we were all saying how he didn't look like he'd lost all that much.

So we'll see if he can avoid hurting it again next year.
