For all the things Kelly Thesier is, you can count on her for one thing: giving you the official organization line. Sometimes, that leaves us angry, guessing, unenlightened, or misled. Other times, that is just what we want to know; we want to know what Terry Ryan and cohorts are thinking.
The first official mailbag of the off-season came out today and shed a bit of light on a few questions we were discussing.
The one I was personally most interested in was the question of Rondell White. The article says that, obviously, for much of the season, there was no way White would be back, but now that isn't so certain. Since he is still on the cheaper side, and he hit much better, the article said, "bringing him back might be in the team's best interest." Also, importantly, it explained White contract status. His option that failed to vest for plate appearances is still available for the team to pick up. She wouldn't give an exact figure, but mentioned it is probably around the 2.5 mil he got this year, which other sources have confirmed for us is true. It also has a 750,000 dollar buyout if the team doesn't want him back. That means bringing White back would cost us under 2 million dollars, and I REALLY REALLY hope Terry Ryan sees the wisdom in doing this, even though it probably wouldn't be a terribly popular decision.
It also talked to some of he issues surrounding Kubel. The article seemed to take a contrary position to the negative comments Ruesse has published recently saying, "The Twins still look at Kubel as one of their key players for the future." Thesier wouldn't have said any of that if Kubel were out of grace with Twins management. Later in the article though, she doesn't seem very confident that he'll necessarily be able to play left consistently, and she mentioned they cant be sure about long term health, but it seems they still want Kubel to be out there, so any reports of him being lazy or falling out of favor seem brought into further question than before.
Several other issues were discussed in the article, but none of them really said anything we didn't already know.
So there you are, we were wondering what the Twins were thinking on a couple of issues, and there you have it, the Twins talking head lets us know what we wanted.
