While today's game was a bummer, the decision I keep lingering on was not Torii's dive but rather Gardy's letting Punto bat in the bottom of the 9th. Me and my work buddy were debating whether Gardy should have PH Nevin or Kubel for Punto. I understand why he didn't, Punto gave him the lefty v. righty matchup and has a higher average than both Nevin and Kubel. However, my thinking was that a 3 run two out rally seemed really difficult to pull off. If Nevin, although he has done little to inspire any confidence since coming to the Twins, had come to the plate he would have given you at least a shot at tieing the game up right then and there. Punto, on the otherhand, could only prolong it with a base hit and then another hit or walk would be atleast needed out of Mauer. I think Gardy probably made the right choice, statistically, but I would have felt a lot better if Nevin had come to the plate knowing that if we did lose, we were at least within one swing of going to extra innings. It just seemed a little deflating to send Punto up with no outs to spare knowing that whatever he did, we would still need another hit. Any thoughts? I'd be interested in hearing what you think.
