Miracle Pitcher Grades thru 5/22

Sorry about the formatting

As of this writing the Fort Myers Miracle are in second place with a 25-19 record.  The strength of the team has been its starting pitching.  Lately the team has fallen from near the top of the league in ERA to 9th of 12 teams.  A good reason is the team is 5th in allowing hits and 3rd in allowing walks.  Couple that with 3rd in home runs allowed and you can see why the team has fallen near the bottom.  Now to the break down

A+ Pitchers  Mat Garza and Kevin Slowey have dominated the Florida State League.  So much so that Slowey allowed 2 earned runs his last game and it was deemed a bad outing.  Garza used power and Slowey uses a little more finesse.  His last game he had at least 3 St Lucie Mets batters break their bat.  This has been the norm for these two.  The  relievers that have done awesome are Danny Powers and Julio DePaula.  Powers was promoted from Beloit to replace DePaula, after he went to New Britain.  Powers hasn't missed a beat allowing opponents to hit .220 while only walking 1 batter in 12 innings.

A- Pitcher  Kyle Aselton is the overlooked starter of the Miracle.  After people look at the stats they are surprised to see where Aselton rates.  Until yesterdays game his ERA was 2.68 with 17 walks in 44 innings.  Normally he is good for 5-6 solid innings and has made a very good 3rd starter in hte present rotation.

B Pitchers   I grouped 3 current relievers in here and one starter who was promoted to New Britain, John Thomas.  Ryan Callahan has pithed much better than his stats show.  He was the victim of a 6 run 2 out effort against Palm Beach when the Miracle lost 17-0.  Until that game his ERA was a little over 1 and a WHIP barely over 1 as well.  He has done very well I middle relief.  Another in this group is the Miracle closer JP Martinez.  he strikes out about 1 batter an inning but walks way too many batters in that role.  Angel Garcia has done well as a reliever as well but has been on the DL for quite a bit of time.

C Pitcher   Anthony Swarzak had come into the year with high hopes after last year with the Miracle.  Thus far he has pitched decent but not outstanding.  His walks are way too high and have got him in trouble numerous times.  Opponents are also hitting .290 against him.

C- Pitchers  Jose Mijares and Tim Lahey make up this category.  Lahey is still learning to pitch as he is a converted catcher in the Twins system.  He is a big guy that throws hard but opponents are hitting .333 against him.  The good thing is he doesn't walk many but for a guy that throws hard he doesn't strike out many either.  Jose Mijares gets in this category as well.  Many people were talking about him and how fast he should progress through the system.  So far he has allowed almost 2 runners per inning.  His box scores will sometimes mislead you into thinking he pitched well despite constant battling with each hitter.

D and F pitchers   Josh Hill earns a D for giving up so many runs.  His WHIP isn't that high and opponents hit at a 263 clip which isn't all that bad but he manages to give up lots of runs.  This is his 3rd part of a year with the Miracle and 6th year overall with the Twins system.  I don't see him making it through the end of the season unless his future games are near perfect.  The last pitcher was a human rain delay.  Alexander Farfan was taken in the Rule V draft and performed like he had I previous years, horribly.  he was released after 10.1 innings where he walked 14 batters and gave up 17 runs.

Incompletes  Justin Jones, Colby Miller and Chris Schutt   Schutt I will give an incomplete because he is coming off an outing much like Callahan in the blowout loss to the Cardinals.  All three pitchers have pitched at higher levels.  Miller is on rehab while Jones and Schutt are looking to find their ways of the past.  Of the three I see Jones having the best future and time running out on Miller.

Nice post...
...it's good to see a look at the youngers.

About the formatting.  If you'd like, I can re-format that table for you to make it more readable this time.  Let me know if you're interested.

In the future, here's the way to make tables work (and it's pretty easy to do once you know how and do it once)

  1.  Use a plain text editor or the window that you're posting into, to make your table look the way you want it to look, using only spaces between characters/numbers and not tabs.
  2.  Put the tag [tt] in the line before the table and the tag [/tt] after the table, replacing the square brackets [ ] with angle brackets < >.
  3.  Make sure that you have selected auto-format or HTML formatting (anything but plain text.)
Thanks again for the nice post, and I hope that helps with future tables you may want to put up.

Please do so if you can.  I will practice for the next one.
Thanks

The edit feature...
...is being much fussier than I anticipated, so I'll just post your table here as a comment.  It appears as though it is much easier to create a table than it is to edit one after a story has been posted.

question
Beach64-
I asked this of Roger as well, but how much stock you put into FSL stats? When I went to a Miracle game it looked like Men (pitchers) vs. Boys (batters).  The game I was at there must have been 8 broken bats.  Plus balls that appeared to be hit well hung up in the humidity and turned into fly outs, although I did see Josh Rabe hit a rocket out.  Thoughts?

FSL
If it was Slowey or Garza I think it is the pitchers breaking the bats. Slowey saws off the hitters in the games I have seen. Sunday I saw at least 3 through the first 5 innings against Slowey. I dont think it is the humidity that keeps the ball down here since so far this year it has been pretty dry. The field is large, as are most in the FSL, and often there is a wind. This time of year it varies which direction but as soon as rainy season starts the wind normally blows in from the right field area since afternoon storms will form in the center of state and go towards the Gulf of Mexico. Also I think the FSL is a league where guys start to become pitchers rather than throwers. That leads to more walks but also batters seeing 2-3 different pitches rather than a fastball and weak curve or slider.
