Matt Garza pitched a complete game shutout tonight for the Rochester Red Wings with 3 hits, 2 walks and 8 strikeouts. Here are his lines from three levels so far this season:
Fort Myers: 5-1 1.42 ERA 44 IP 27 H 11 BB 53 K
New Britain: 6-2 2.51 ERA 57.1 IP 40 H 14 BB 68 K
Rochester: 2-1 2.05 ERA 22 IP 12 H 5 BB 21 K
Totals: 13-4 2.08 ERA 123.1 IP 79 H 30 BB 142 K
I have heard that you don't call Garza up because Scott Baker did the same thing two years ago, so Garza's ascent through the system means nothing. Yes, Baker climbed up every level in 2004. But he did not dominate like this, especially with the strikeouts. And he does not posses a 95 MPH fastball and a good four pitch mix.
Right now, Garza is the fourth best starter in the organization. It sure would be a shot in the arm to insert him into the rotation. If either Silva or Baker struggle in the next week and Garza continues to dominate AAA like this for two more starts, it's time to give Garza the ball as the fifth starter.
