Eduardo Morlan

I've lurked on this site since it was first started, but decided to make my first post today.

I had the priviledge of going to see Beloit take on Fort Wayne yesterday, and while I only got to see 5 innings of the game (due to having a 2 1/2 year old that needed his nap), I must say that I was impressed.

Morlan was amazing, and there is not much else to say about it.  He had a no hitter when I left the game and had hitters doing nothing but guessing.  He struck out 5 of the first 6 batters he faced and was in the 90s on the gun all day.  He topped out at 97.  I think he may rise through the system the same way Liriano and Garza have done.  Here's to hoping.

Game
I think what most of us would like to know is... with a no-hitter going through five... how did you leave that game???

Anyway, I think a lot of us have heard or read a lot about how dynamic Morlan is. Obviously he has had some arm concerns, but when healthy, he has put up great numbers.

Can you tell us a little about what you saw? He throws hard, but what else does he throw and how do those pitches work? Is a slider sharp, or a changeup deceptive?

Unfortunately, I have to choose between a happy wife and kids and a good game (it was a company family event, so I really can't complain as it was free).  Both children were overdue for a nap and were keeping me from watching much of it anyways.

He was getting a lot of hitters to swing and miss, so he's got something deceptive, but I don't remember if it was a changeup or a breaking pitch.  He seemed to throw mostly fastballs, as I noticed that the opposing pitcher seemed to throw a lot more breaking pitches (for strikes too).  I should also note that I didn't have a good angle, so I couldn't tell you how sharp the pitches were.  I will say this, Fort Wayne hitters didn't make solid contact until the 5th inning, and he did seem to have at least one decent breaking pitch. If my memory is correct, it rode in on right handed batters (but my angle was definitely not good enough to say that definitively).

From what I could tell, he missed the strike zone more with his breaking pitches, which I guess is to be expected.

After watching him pitch, I'm thinking he has the "stuff" to rise through the system next year like Liriano and Garza did.  He should start in Fort Meyers next season, so who knows.

Yeah
I have a things with this.  I won't leave a game early for anything.  i've passed up free tickets knowing I'd have to leave early.

In first grade, my class went on a field trip too a Twins game, but we were supposed to be back in time for school to end normally, which was around 3:30, if I recall.  I asked the teacher, "so we'll have to leave at 3:00, what if the game isn't over?"

"Well, it could be over or pretty late."

"It won't be over by then, that's only two hours."

"We have to be back by then, so we'll just have to go."

I responded something like the first grade equivlant of "screw that" and didn't go at all.  I can't just get into a game then pick up and leave early.  I've been to over 300 games in my life and never left early once.

Not that I'm trying to rag on you, just passing along a personal anecdote, as if you all actually care or something.

During the 20003...
...playoff collapse in the final game, I couldn't stand to see anymore in the 8th and went outside the dome and listened to it on the radio instead.

Does that count as leaving?

Yes.....
You should be tarred and feathered, boiled in french fry grease, forced to listen to non-stop John Gordon commercials.....

by twintown on Aug 15, 2006 1:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Of the three...
Gordon's comercials are by far the worst punishment. There's a circle of Hell in which all you hear is Gordon commercials.

There's another deeper circle of Hell for commercials by thet smarmy Maaike Maax. "I'm Maaike Maax for Cambira. My wife Jennifer and I love those all natural quartz countertops. In fact we make love on them all the time. You can do anything on them, wipe them down with a warm rag, and cook a four course meal on the same surface. It's all good. Satisfaction guaranteed or my name is not Maaike Maax." [barf]

The best part of the move to KSTP is no more Maaike Maax and no more Dark Star. If I hear that guy say "yes indeed" one more time, I'm driving my car into a bridge abuttment.

Joe Mauer for MVP.

Hmm
It's good to know the Twins will make the playoffs in 20003 :P

I do wonder about those of us outstate (or in Iowa as I will be) how will we get the games? Will the affiliates change?

by MNPundit on Aug 16, 2006 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

The affiliate...
...network is actually independent of WCCO.  This network will continue as well as being enhanced with several stations in areas that KSTP doesn't have strong coverage.

Right
Another benefit to moving to KSTP will be that Dave St. Peter can work to fill gaps in coverage. With CCO in control of the affiliates, there are rather large gaps in current coverage.

Living in Faribault, which is just  45 minutes south of Burnsville, it is always a challenge gettting good reception. The Northfield station is just a few hundred watts and fades at twilight. The Mankato and Austin stations are somewhat stronger but farther away. The Rochester station fades in Kenyan, 15 miles to the west. The flagship is strongest signal, but the trasnmitter is north of the cities, so southern exposure is spotty. The signal fades just north of my house. After dark, it seems to come and go and it fights interference from a Latin music station out of Austin.

Change is scarry. But I know St. Peter a little from a previous job and he will drive to fill in the gaps in coverage. He'll also work with the flagship and the affiliates to improve what is currently offered, which is more and more about advertising and less and less about actually covering the games and offering analysis. The situation has reached ridiculous proportions when there's a Gordon ad between every batter and the call comes a few seconds after the crowd roars because he has to finish up his ad. Last week, he had a 3-2 count on a batter without calling a single pitch.

I wonder.....
what kind of dollar amounts we are talking when every pitch seems to have a sponsor.

WCCO will survive. They survived the loss of the Vikings.

Just means more Maxie and Dark Star!

KFGO in my area
KFGO based in Fargo you can get about 100 miles in every direction. The other day I even got CCO up here very faintly. Thanks for easing my fears tho.

Darkie Starr
How about the image of Markie AND Darkie making love on a Cambira countertop.

"Unbelievable!"

WHY??!
AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Actually, I'm glad i don't know what they look like really, so I don't have a mental picture of it.

Whew.

Question of the week...
Anyone know why he's not called John "Flash" Gordon anymore. Doesn't he do that anymore on the road?
