This is not one of my longer posts. More of a rant, really. I'm just curious why the Twins bothered to acquire Phil Nevin if Gardy refuses to use him. He's played in all of three out of nine games since the trade. Meanwhile, Jason Tyner has DHed twice while Nevin has rode the pine. That's a head scratcher.
Why would anyone do such a thing? Well Gardy has three very annoying tendancies when it comes to his line-up:
- Gardy hates moving guys around. He'd rather have Luis Rodriguez hitting second than move Jason Bartlett out of the nine hole to hit second. In this case, Tyner has hit eighth for most of the second half, so why change? You wonder if he would have Carlos Lee on the bench with Tyner as DH.
- Gardy likes the piranhas. He probably thinks that being able to go from first to third on a single is more important than being able to hit home runs and take walks.
- Gardy loves to play the "hot hand". Not that he uses numbers to determine who is hot. This is just a "gut feel" thing. Often this means implicitly benching a guy after one bad game.
