Open Thread: Brewers DFA Mench

Does he still have supporters in Minnesota?

For years in the blogosphere, Kevin Mench has been a player Twins fans have coveted.  Today, according to MLB.com, Milwaukee has designated the one-time Ranger slugger for assignment.

Still interested?

Eh
With Delmon Young in the outfield he doesn't seem as useful. Unless he magically develops the ability to play center field.

Eh, not really
I mean, I wouldn't mind having him around as a lefty-masher, but there's a roster construction problem, namely that, with Cuddyer, a yet unknown CF, and Cuddyer as the OF, and Kubel as the DH and de facto 4th OF, you need a 5th OF that can actually play center field, which is not Mench.

I myself might punt on that, and just live with having to move Young to center for a while if the CF is out, but I don't think Gardenhire would be happy about that sort of roster construction.  He'll want a speedy CF/pinch-runner type with the above group.

Eep
I'd be disappointed in the personnel decisions of the team if the Twins decide to put Delmon Young in center field.  It's not a good fit, no matter how good of an athlete he is.  I agree and hope you're right, that we aren't forced into this move, whether a flier it taken on Mench or not.

pass
His skills magically evaporated after they started the more stringent testing. He's certainly no better than Craig Monroe, and he has fewer defensive skills. So I would say keep Monroe if you can get him more cheaply than $4 mil and pass on Mench.

That's what I found in my research as well.  I was definitely on the Mench bandwagon back in '05, but these days I'm not so keen.

Yep...
I used to like Mench as a platoon option somewhere too, but now, doesn't really work.

Monroe is better than him.  I still hope we keep Monroe for a cheaper rate as the 4th OF (with Kubel of course) and just have Pridie as the 5th/CF (instead of Tyner).

It is probably wise that TR did not acquire Mench back then, eh?  He certainly made other mistakes, but failing to acquire this particular DH/outfielder turned out to be a good non-move.

I swear I didn't see WITwins fan's "Eh"
before I posted mine.

It deserves 2 "Ehs" anyway.

Makes Monroe regrettable
So...we would have saved a lot of money for a very similar player to Craig Monroe.  Such is life.

No thanks
For all the reasons said above.
