Twins vs. Yanks Tonite on FSN

Twins vs. Yankees in a Spring Training matchup tonite.  It should be a pleasant change of pace from the nightly basketball games.

The Chief will throw for the Twins vs. Jeff Karstens for the Yankees.

re: "chief"
always thought that name was funny, because i always picture it as praying for rain when he pitches.

Hmm
Silva.  Hmm hmm hmm.

Hopefully Ryan will have a short leash with him, because I'm less and less optimistic that he hasn't totally lost it.  We'll find out I guess.  He DID get balls on the ground I guess, but those walks are no good for him...

Yep...
Silva has to throw pretty much all strikes to even have a chance at being effective.  I'm not liking the excuses coming from him and Gardy.  Sounds like Lohse all over again.

I just pray that the leash is short on him.  Slowey and Garza are ready NOW, as is Perkins in all likelihood.  Just let them play.

Silva
I'm pretty sure Silva won't be givin' TOO long to suck in the majors.  If he really can't throw a good sinker after working on it all spring, he's not sticking around.  I'm pretty sure Garza will be on the team as well, and apparently Bonser has got his spot down now.

I'd like to see Perkins and Slowey in AAA for a little while, mostly because they've never been there before.  Perkins needs to figure out what he's doing with this sinker/throwing inside thing he's toying with.  i think that can have good results, but he has to be willing to try a few different approaches with it to find a way that doesn't cut down on strikeouts or add too many more hits but gets a decent number more grounders.  He also has to be willing to dump the approach outright if it isn't really working.

I'm optimistic that ORtiz can be effective for us at this point, for a reason I said I would be over the offseason.  Anderson has said two things that he identified about Ortiz over the offseason that made him think they can improve him.  The first is the big inning thing, and I don't put as much stock in that, but perhaps they can teach Ortiz to keep it together better.  The more important thing is Anderson is working on Ortiz's changeup and teaching him how to change speeds better to get more outs.  I always said if Anderson had seen a couple specific things in Ortiz he thought he could improve that it might turn out to be a good signing.  Maybe I've just forced myself to be too optimistic over a  few good spring training starts, but if anyone can help a pitcher it's Rick Anderson, and Ortiz has said he's totally willing to do what Anderson says, so we'll see.

Anyways, I'm still of the opinion our rotational concerns are overblown since I think we have plenty enough options to fill out a good rotation with all of our options.  Be it one of our crack prospects, a resurgent Silva, or a now-respectable Ortiz, I think we've got so many players with chances to be good that statistically speaking enough should work out.

I think we may suffer through several weeks of bad Silva though.  I'd love to see him come back around though as he always gave the team a shot to win in 04 and 05.
