Community Projection - Sidney Ponson

[What is this?]

I know many of us here would rather not see Sir Sid in the rotation.  What I want to know is how you think Ponson will pitch regardless of whether or not he should be in the rotation.  All too often in life what we get and what we want are two different things.

As usual, if you're submitting a projection (and please do so), just make a comment including your projected innings pitched, ERA, strikeouts/9, walks/9, home runs/9.  Discussion/suggestions encouraged, and thanks to those who have been letting their opinions be known.

I'll say...
140 IP, 5.40 ERA, 4.9 K/9, 3.2 BB/9, 1.00 HR/9

With a reasonably large non-zero probability that he does a better '04 Silva impersonation than Silva himself does.

Ponson...
...is most likely going to make the starting rotation, although there is still hope that Garza will get this slot.

My prediction, assuming he is in the rotation at all, is that he will be gone by mid/late May:

7 starts, 33 IP, 5.75 ERA, 5 K/9, 4 BB/9, 1W-4L

Matt Garza will replace him and in 25 starts, have a 10-7 record with a 3.85 ERA.

I completely agree on the numbers...
Roger, for both Ponson and Garza, but I think it will be Silva Garza is replacing, maybe even by May 1st.  I think Ponson might last until June, and as such will pitch more like 60 IP, but with those numbers.

Joe Mauer for MVP (for real).

Ponson
42 IP

5.85 ERA, 4.3 K/9, 3.2 BB/9, 1.2 HR/9

Assuming he makes the rotation, he'll pitch better than Silva (I have Silva with a 6.75 ERA) but will be replaced sooner, by mid-May, because he's making a lot less.

Ponson
Like a player far in the past (who was it, Punto?), I find it hard to project Ponson because his numbers have all been all over the place in the past.  He's a guy where you'd pretty much just be guessing on where he'll end up on his very wide possible performance area.  He'll also probably end up fairly close to one end or the other (ie, I don't think ERA's in the 4.75-5.25 range are very likely).

All I know is I wasn't impressed.  I'd say there is a 50/50 chance he's the first starter replaced, with most of the rest of those odds going with Silva.

We'll just kind of have to see how it goes with him.

Baseball is great because you cant take a knee or kill the clock. You gotta put the ball over the plate and give the other guy his damn shot E Weaver abridged
