Backup SS

What are your thoughts on the situation?

Star-divide

I don't want to come here and post links to my stories from my blog, but I thought this was an interesting topic.

(I should also add that I tried to post it here, but the HTML would not work.)

So, below is a link to the story about what I think the the Twins should do about the backup SS.

Please leave your thoughts here about the situation. (As I mention at the end of the post.)

Good thought...
I like it too if we don't have to give up anything of real value.  And I guess Ken Rosenthal just wrote that we are interested.

A big part of me though just says to not really trade anything for a backup MI, just on principal.  It's really a VERY marginal upgrade, so if it's not REALLY low-cost I don't do it.

I guess in direct terms, I'm saying, if it's Venafro, certainly do it (though he could just go over there if he wants anyway if he doesn't make the team I believe), but if it's Durbin, I'd think twice, but would probably be okay with it.

Looks
Looks like for the time being were seeing the team just piece it all together.  Cirillo is readying to play there a bit (though I doubt Gardenhire will like that much) and Gardenhrie finally relented and asked Punto to start taking a few balls at short for occasional play there as well.  L-Rod will get some time too.  It will be a little mix and match for awhile, but then again, we'll only need a backup once every two weeks.

Hopefully Machado will come back healthy, we'll get a good look at him, and he'll be a good bench player for us for several years.

Durbin
The thing with Durbin is, I don't see him being a big factor on the major league roster, and since he is out of options, if we don't have him in the majors we lose him anyways. So why not trade him and get something out of it.

That is
That is probably the other possibility.  When Ford is coming back, the Twins will just trade Durbin for a utility guy.  At that point, we'd probably lose him anyway, unless he was doing really well, so we might as well have a guy we can have on roster.

We'll see how it all pans out.

when..
When is the "Real Deal" going to show up?  He's been given chances at the big league since 2004.  The Twins hate pitchers that walk people, well that seems like that's all he does...

"Real Deal"
Well, if he doesn't make the roster, he'll never show up for the Twins because he will have to find a new team.

What is a shame...
...is that he was pitching the best of his life last season before the unusual injury.  Problem is he has had a serious injury the last two years.  Someone will happily claim a player with his potential off waivers and I think the Twins will do everything possible to not lose him because of his talent.

Wait.....
Sure, the Twins don't want to lose him, but they can lose him and not sweat, sorry. There's more than enough talent coming up via the minors.

Sure, maybe I'd consider keeping Durbin and cutting loose Silva. I bet Durbin, with whomever he picks up with, will have better numbers than Carlos come July, if not September.

Again, have to know when to cut and run, when to keep or trade. Durbin was valuable, then went down last season. Now there's no room on the mound (unless other stiffs leave...i.e. Silva, Ponson). Yet, do you stick with the grizzled guys with experience, or go with the unproven young talent.
