This is always fun, so here's my 25-man prediction as we get down to the wire -
Rotation: Santana, Bonser, Ortiz, Ponson, Silva (5)
Bullpen: Nathan, Rincon, Crain, Reyes, Neshek, Guerrier, Durbin (7)
Infield: Mauer, Morneau, Castillo, Punto, Bartlett, Redmond, Cirillo, Rodriguez (8)
Outfield: Kubel, Hunter, Cuddyer, White, Tyner (5)
Whay you ask? Excellent question. Read on.
Silva will be skipped when possible and given bullpens and one or two starts to see if he gets it. If not, Garza is called up and Silva is sent through waivers and assigned to AAA. He can turn down the assignment, but he forfeits his contract (according to LEN III), which he will never make back.
Venafro has been cut, but it sounds like the Twins want him to go to Rochester with the promise that he will get called up relatively soon because (much like Reyes last year)-
Durbin is stashed in the bullpen and is trade-bait. If traded, Venafro gets called up as the second lefty.
No extra IF because Bartlett won't need many days off early and Gardy will relent and move Punto as soon as Rodriguez or Cirillo make an error.
Two wild cards. First, if the Twins trade for a back-up IF, then Rodriguez likely goes down or Venafro does not get the call. I would bet on the former. Second, if and when Lew Ford gets healthy. No idea what happens then - he takes Venafro's spot?
What do you think? Wild speculation is not only welcome but encouraged.
