Around SBN: The Worst Season of Francisco Rodriguez's Career Bar-right-arrows

The Real Deal: Boston

Our favorite failed draft pick has caught on with a new team!

Star-divide

The Red Sox have claimed J.D. Durbin off waivers from the Diamondbacks.  Durbin has pitched exactly two thirds of an inning at the major league level this season, giving up seven(!) earned runs on seven hits against the Rockies, leaving him with a career Diamondbacks ERA of 94.50.

I highly encourage all of you to also check out Deadspin's coverage of this transaction, includes a mildly disturbing picture of The Real Deal dressed as a cooler and a link to his MySpace page.

Not a Twins-type player
As Bert would say. The Real Deal is not much of a character guy, despite Mauer's influence.

It'll be interesting to see what Ibanez can do against him.

Free Matt Garza.

Myspace
He seems to have cancelled his myspace account.  I did get a chance to see it before this post, and it screams of "college jock."  Poor Real Deal.

Would
he then have to pass through waivers again to to to AAA?

by madfan on Apr 11, 2007 3:09 PM EDT   0 recs

Yep......
but waivers are in reverse order of where the teams stood at the end of last season. So there's only a couple of otehr teams that finished higher than Boston left to claim him, if necessary. The Twins, sadly, are no longer in the hunt unless he draws a release.

I
I don't think it would be acceptably ethical to cast him aside and then gobble him back into our system that we have already admitted has no future for him.  Teams don't usually do things like that.
Baseball is great because you cant take a knee or kill the clock. You gotta put the ball over the plate and give the other guy his damn shot E Weaver abridged

Not a Cast
Well, it was kinda of a "do or die" situation with the Twins. They only had the options of keeping him in the majors or -- as happened -- losing him.

Come season's end, Durbin will be a minor league free agent again, unless he is on the 40-man roster (which means he'll make it as a call-up that established his talent at the major elague level, or he'll become the wandering minor league guy.)

Always a chance that he could be back, but highly unlikely with the amount of talent in the Twins system for the next 3-4 years.

Was it acceptably ethical...
...for the Red Sox to grab him off waivers just to try to pass him to their AAA team?  The whole purpose of running out of options would seem to be to find someone a home where they have a chance to play.  I don't think Durbin has any more chance pitching for the Red Sox than he does the Twins, and I certainly don't see how the Red Sox should get him in their minor league system instead of the D:Backs.

I don't see how the system is working here.

Luck of the draw.....
Sadly, that's how the system works. But, they do have to have a roster spot on the 40-man for Durbin, so there is a little sacrifice for the team to claim him.
