Slowey MLB debut

Looked amazing against Buck. Beautiful pitch for the K.

Two hard hit liners from Swish and Bradley.  Dan Johnson is having an incredible at bat.

12 pitches to Johnson so far aaaand he draws ball four.  Bases loaded for Chavez.

One of those double play balls would sure be fun.

Swinging strike one to Chavez, sinking fastball down and away.  Ball one, high.  1-1 pitch popped up behind the plate, and Redmond has it.  Good shit.  Two down, and Crosby up.  Could be huge to get out of this with no runs allowed.

Groundout, Bart to Castillo.

Way to work out of a jam in your first MLB inning, Kevin Slowey.

although that was also heart-attack inducing.

punto comes in from third to catch the popup right in front of home plate.  Slowey's thrown somewhere around 75 pitches through 3.  might be a short introduction to the show, innings wise.

by gophersw on Jun 1, 2007 11:09 PM EDT reply actions

Geez
Geez, these guys are really fouling pitches off on him.  One thing he may have to start to learn is pitching for a little more contact instead of trying to strikeout these guys out and ending up with foul backs.

So even though he's thrown 63 pitches, he's still pitched pretty well, not allowing any hitters to drive the ball and not backing down against the big hitters.  It's only 3 innings, but it's a decent start.

Kevin just lost his control a little bit there.  Probably cost him a shot at the seventh, and maybe even cost him a shot at the sixth.  We'll see if they let him back out there for the sixth.

We've got 4 walks and 4 hits but only 1 run.  Time for a little more execution today against another junk-ball lefty.  I'd sure like a couple insurance runs to take the stress out for the end.

Ahg
Well, that' almost definitely it for Slowey.  A great 99 pitch outing.  6 IP, 5 hits, 2 walks, 3 K's and only one run on a solo home run to Eric Chavez.

Now let's see the boys get out there and take that one back in the top of the inning and get Slowey the win in his debut.

Hopefully, if the Twins hold on for one more, we'll be into the A's vastly depleted bullpen.

MacAfee radar gun
Anybody notice that it's a really slow gun? I was watching him throw mostly around 88-89 and thinking, "as good as his control is, he'll get lit up at some point." Then Rincon came on and he couldn't crack 90. Then Nathan only cracked 90 twice, and I think one of those was a measure of Bradley's swing. This gun seems to be four or five mph slower than the Dome gun. If that's the case, 88-89 is not so bad.
Free Kevin Slowey.

by cmathewson on Jun 2, 2007 12:31 PM EDT reply actions

MLB Gameday had....
...enhanced pitch data last night, which had Nathan's fastball at about 94/83 (release speed/final speed) and Slowey's at 91/82.  The way that they collect that data sounds a lot more reliable than ballpark radar guns.

Seth
Yeah, I posted that comment before heading over to Seth's site and reading it there, along with your comment of a similar sort. Those velocity readings, to go along with better movement that we have expected are really encouraging.
Get well soon, Joe.

by cmathewson on Jun 2, 2007 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Speeds
One thing about Slowey's fastball that was kind fo cool was that it varied from about 91 to about 88.  E threw it 88 now and then to take a little bit off.  He varied a few MPH with his change too.
