Nobody wants Wily Mo except me

According to MLBtraderumors.com Wily Mo Pena passed through waivers without anyone putting in  a claim.  Is spending $580k on a guy who might be a good upgrade at DH too much of a risk?  He couldn't be much worse than what we have been using this year.  I think that making him our everyday DH with an occasional stint in right field could possibly pay off quite well.  At least the $580k it would have cost to get him.

I like him
I like WMP, as many others do here, but I've heard a big issue with him is that Boston has used up too much of his cheap service time, so a longer-term deal would be required fairly quickly. He's just over 4 years of ML service now, and I really have no clue how that whole process works, but this is what I've heard.
Replace Nick Punto.

more worried about hole at DH than service time
Well his 2007 salary was $1,875,000 and he's hitting .219 with 5 HR so that means, at least to me, that he couldn't actually expect to make that much in arbitration or a long term contract.  I think that picking up a guy on the cheap, giving him the rest of the season to prove himself, and worrying about a long-term deal or arbitration later sounds good to me.  Plus he could be a guy to possibly fill a HUGE hole in the lineup.

Conversation
Theo: Eric! Nice to meet you. You know, you've really come in at a great time in Red Sox history. We're playing well, but could really use your help in our playoff drive.

Gagne: Nice to be here

Theo: We would like you to know our expectations of you, so you know exactly where you stand. When we need a strikeout, we're bringing you in.

Gagne: I thought that was why you had Wily Mo Pena?

whatever
Never said I made it up. I saw it on deadspin at the trading deadline. Though it was better with pictures.

Still, outlines Pena's usefulness perfectly. He's a joke.

As opposed to
our current DH situation, which is clearly stellar.
Replace Nick Punto.

I think he's worth a flyer too...
sure, he might not do anything, but what do you really lose?  Especially with our current group.

I'd rather take a chance on a young guy...
...with potential than an old guy who has proven he's bad, which is probably what we'll get next year.

WMP is young though...
and does have potential still.

Unless you're agreeing with me.

HAHA...
got it.  I was confused there for a second.

I'd really like to have Gomes or Quentin, but no matter what WMP is worth a shot because he doesn't cost anything.
