My Wily Mo man-crush

5-11  with 2 doubles, 2HR, 3RBI, 2K, 3BB in three games with the Nationals.  I actually watched the two games against the Mets and was struck by two things.  His power-the commentators were saying that he was crushing the ball into the yellow seats at RFK during batting practice-if you have ever been to RFK I think you might be a little impressed, and he hit a double that went to the CF wall before Beltran could even move to get it.  And his attitude-he absolutely believes that given the opportunity to play on a regular basis he could really produce some good numbers-no small feat because his defence is pretty brutal.
I still think it is too bad we didn't pick this guy up, but I wonder if there any other diamonds in the rough we might be able to pick up in the off-season?  If we aren't spending $12-14 million on Torii Hunter, where might that money go to besides the Pohlads bank account?

I like him a lot but good god if there is one guy who just might be taking a teeensy little bit of HGH it just might be him.  The guy doesn't have a freakin' neck.

Mad.....
I was so mad when I saw what he got traded for. The Red Sox even paid part of his contract, and sent other players to the Nationals.

Actually...
they made out really well.  They got Cris Carter from the D'Backs in the deal (3-team deal) who is a masher that offers them both insurance for Lowell at 3b (Youk to 3b, Carter to 1b) and Ortiz (if he's really breaking down).

I've wanted Carter for a while, and I know I'm not the only one on here with that sentiment.

But yes, I think WMP would have been worth a flyer.  I still think Monroe would be worth one now as well.

right
I was just going to say that. This was a lot more frustrating when it seemed like Wily Mo was just sitting out there, available for a song. Still frustrating, but not crazy-go-nuts frustrating.

one thing to consider
I don't think teams in the AL are too eager to dump guys on the Twins.  Even though the Red Sox aren't in our division, the Twins still compete with the Red Sox for the playoffs in a general sense (ie, wild card) and then possibly in the playoffs, so the last thing Epstein wants to see is Pena make an impact on a playoff-worthy AL team.

Same goes for Monroe, even moreso.  If these teams have a choice in the matter, they would obviously prefer to dump them into the NL, and a team like the Nats is perfect in that context.  So I wish they could have got Pena too, but I wouldn't go blaming Ryan so much, we have no idea if the Bosox would even entertain the idea of trading him to the Twins since they obviously had another suitor in the Nationals.

Once a player clears waivers. . .
Once a player clears waivers, are they clear for the rest of the season -- for example, could the Nats, not that they would, trade Willy Mo to the Twins for something?  Or would he have to pass through waivers again?

Jeff Conine
Advertised as a pinch-hitter, Conine was picked up by the New York Mets for two prospects.

He would solve the third catcher problem.

He would be the veteran bat off the bench.

Now the Mets have him.

IN OTHER NEWS: Jeff Cirillo actually pitched an inning for the Diamondbacks Monday, walking two and striking out one. A new career path, perhaps?
