Okay! Can anyone, please, explain why the Twins aren't calling up more bodies for a looksee, at least?
Instead we get Heintz (who didn't really catch all that many games at Rochester, it was Morales behind-the-playe, especially for the Slowey starts!), Lew busted toe Ford who is making a million but I would rather see Span get a looksee at major league meal money. Tommy Watkins is possibly out for the season and Luis Rodriguez is probably on the outs for Twins-land 2008. Where is Matt Tolbert? Find an extra roster spot and have him come up (Simonitsch removed from 40-man now, perhaps)?
I don't know how badly the Twins need to look at Mr. McDonald again. Maybe swap him out for Trent Oeltjen, or, better yet, Garrett Guzman, who will be 40-manned come November, I'm sure.
Please, tell me what is the disadvantage of 40-manning a guy in September compared to the offseason? Service time? Options? If the Twins decide to 40-man someone, chances are they will make the majors sometime during their career. Just don't do it too soon (why was Sosa 40-manned, for example).
And speaking of pitchers...let's looksee at lefty Rocky Barrett. Or bring up Jose Mijares and let him throw a few innings and add $25-grand to his wallet. Why did they let Jason Miller go...at least right now. Long lefty out of the bullpen who had that horrendous outing, but can't you say the same for DePaula or Cali? Hey, even Neshek and Guerrier has had a bad outing or two, as has Nathan. And don't get me talking Rincon.
Used to be September expansions were a time to bring up an aging veteran who needed a bit mroe service time towards a pension. Now it is a reward for a season well done in the minors (Morales, please!) or to actually look at the potential repalcement parts you may have to deal with, if not full-time at least if someone goes down with an injury in 2008.
September can rival spring training for the competition amongst the lowly teams (are the Twins such a team yet), yet you have high competition against those still in the race.
Final note: Why is there any need to see what Rondell White can still contribute to this team. I'm sorry, puny Tyner and his bing-bang bat is a better go-to than Mr. .160.
