Several sources are reporting that the Mets are having a hard time signing Santana. Bill Smith says, "Omar, welcome to my world."
I predict they'll sign him, because, imagine the backlash in New York if they let him go back to the Twins with this group of prospects on the table. And Santana and his agent know this. So they'll milk Omar for six additional years and $136.5 million, or a total of seven years, $150 million when you add 2008 into the deal.
Once the new contract is signed and the details emerge, the Twins might get a little more sympathy from the casual fan. "They paid what!?" will be the standard response. And Nick Coleman will stop comparing Pohlad to Scrooge, and will slither back to his desk and look for the next homeless guy displaced by the new stadium to do a story on.
