Morning After Poll: How are you doing?

We've all had a night to digest the game, and we wake up this morning knowing that we now face six months without baseball.  It'd only be courteous of us to ask how you're doing.

Me, I'm still swinging wildly between "burning with rage" and "crushed with disappointment," but I suppose that'll fade soon.

How about you?

I'm just sad.

No more baseball for half a year. I hope the Brewers or Rays win the WS, I probably won’t be watching though. sigh..

And Gardenhire!

The organization needs blood from outside to shake things up or we’ll never move to the next level.

fire Bill Smith?!

that is really low guys! I like him…would you rather have TR?! Bill Smith did what he had to do in order to improve this club. Sometimes it doesnt work out the way you want it too (Lamb, Monroe)…but he took risks.

He had to hang on to Hernandez until it was certain that Liriano could locate so that was a good move. Yes, Mijares could have come up earlier but who knew that he would have done this?!

Overall, it was a good FIRST year for Bill Smith….now, there will be changes!

Dont Fire Smith

Everybody was calling for his head when he made the Santana Trade, Which i now Look back at and say i like the Trade because Guerra, Mulvey, Humber and Gomez all have a future and promise, I disagree, he should have never signed Livan Hernandez, Mike Lamb or Everett, In All Honesty, We should have Resigned Carlos Silva, if we couldnt do that, we probably wouldnt have needed that one game playoff if he Signed David Eckstein for SS, Let Buscher and Harris Platoon at 3rd, and Signed Kyle Loshe Back.

Whhaaa???

Are you seriously saying we should’ve beaten out Seattle’s 4yr/$48mil to Silva?

by JopeX37 on Oct 1, 2008 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Uggh

It sucks and all but to be honest I am pretty excited about next year already. I’ll be very interested to see what they plan on doing in the offseason now.

My one game complaint and yes I said it before he tagged up. Why not run Pridie for Cuddy in that spot. By the time Cuddyer would have been up again they could have put Kubel in the game most likely against a reliever. Not an awful mistake or anything but still.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

I'm Obviously Disappointed

But that’s normal. I’m thinking about what could’ve been: a three game sweep by the Rays.

I’m still upset with that stupid rule, but there is nothing I can do about that. I don’t know if I really want to get over this loss so soon. I want to sit on it for a few days before I move on and become Ray fans and look to the future in Minnesota.

Twins didn't deserve to move on

Let’s face it.

What was their record when in first place, or tied for first? Pretty dismal, whatever it was.

Every time they had an opportunity to prove they deserved to be the top team in the division they went and hid in second place. They blew games they should have won—including Nathan’s three blown saves on the long road trip—they blew games against poor teams (like K.C. and Seattle), and, didn’t show up for big games in Boston and New York.

They were just good enough to pretend.

That’s not a disaster for a young team, but, it is humbling for us fans who invested elite baseball status in a team that did not merit it.

Nicely Put

I’ve felt the same way all summer so it’s not as bad for me as some others. You are absolutely 100% right.

Moving on...

Maybe the Twins didn’t deserve to move on, but did the White Sox really do that much better? When you look at how both teams played the last month/month and a half, it doesn’t exactly scream PLAYOFFS!!!. It more cackles PLAYOFFS?!!?

Personally I felt it was an overly disappointing end to an otherwise masterful “rebuilding” season. By overly I mean that I know I shouldn’t be this disappointed. I made (and subsequently broke) a promise to myself that I would be happy with a .500 season. Which of course lead to one of those, “I knew I shouldn’t have gotten my hopes up/I wish I could quit you (for the season)” ends.

After pulling the Thome dagger from my heart,

I realized that this has been a very entertaining season. I truly got my money’s worth in being a Twins fan. The so called sports pundits that picked us to finish anywhere from last to third were so horribly wrong that they should find jobs at McDonald’s as the supervisor of french fries. Even that job may be too tough for them. As a team we overachieved to the max. Several players had break out seasons and the starting rotation proved that there is life after Santana and Silva. The glass is most definitely half full for next year and I can’t wait for spring training to start. I may even have to visit Florida in March this year. So, my mourning period is over and I am counting the days until opening day in a new stadium. Go Twins…..

Twins had a good year, but let's not fool ourselves

Our 2nd place finish was just as attributable to the mediocrity of the Central than it is to the team, or to Ron Gardenhire. For those of you trashing the pundits, or complaining the Twins don’t deserve anything, or calling for the firing of Gardenhire or Smith – please get a grip.

The Indians inexplicably imploded. So did the Tigers. Chicago and Cleveland both had injuries that were more devastating to their teams than our team did. We lost Neshek – the White Sox lost the arguable league MVP. We lost Cuddyer, but Span was arguably more effective this year than Cuddyer was in 2007.

Our success is a product of those teams’ failures. Nonetheless our team played hard, put out a good product and battled all season (with the possible exception of that stinker against the Royals last week after sweeping the White Sox).

If your definition of “we didn’t ‘deserve’ it” is that we didn’t pull away from the Sox when we had our chances than no one from the Central “deserved” anything. Neither did anyone from the East as neither Boston nor Tampa pulled away from the other, or from the wild card competitors. Chicago didn’t “deserve” it any more than we didn’t “deserve” it.

What about the gutsy, gritty performance in that last sweep of the White sox last week? When you factor in the late come from behind victory when the Twins players and staff refused to give up I would argue that we deserved it as much as anyone else did.

Every team blows games they shouldn’t. It is a long season. We also won some games that we shouldn’t have. Stole some, in fact, through a never give up attitude that I believe Ron Gardenhire deserves a lot of credit for. For those of you pointing to Seattle or KC, how about refreshing your selective memory (as mine isn’t good enough admittedly – I can’t even remember what I had for brakfast this morning) and making a more honest assessment that includes the series’ we either stole or outperformed, like the 4 against the white hot angels in Anaheim.

Anyone who thought Minnesota was an elite team at any point in this season was (or is) smoking crack, and if any of you listened to that, and are using that to fuel your sour grapes attitudes this morning than I feel sorry for you. This season is what it was. A ggod season by a slightly overperforming group of youngsters and role players who got lucky due to other team’s miseries, and outperformed expectations because of that, combined with the type of grit, hustle, and lunchbucket mentality that we love from our Minnesota sports teams. Get over it.

Sorry we couldn't put it away for you guys two days ago...

…but you guys should just be pissed that the game wasn’t in Minnesota. You guys had the season series, and finished the season on time, unlike Chicago. Hopefully Tampa puts them away in three.

Good luck, and GO TIGERS.

Eat 'em up!

Whistful? Introspective?

Perhaps dormant is a better word. I’ll be watching the playoffs, but my Twins fan side has gone dormant, and I know it’s not coming back for awhile. It’s the beginning of the end now.

I wore my hat today to “honor the fallen.” One of my friends joked I was acting like it was 9/11 or something.

It hurts every time, but as I’ve said to people, it’s not like we can’t take it, just put it in line with the long list of Minnesota Sports disappointments. 2002, 2004, and 2006 probably hurt worse. 1998 Vikings probably was worse too.

We’ll get one… someday…

Gary Freaking Anderson

We went to the football field right after the game to kick 30 yarders. That was WAY worse (assuming Viking Fandom of course). 2006 would have to be next. Just because of the “they came all the way back for that?”
