Minnesota Twins Prospect #14 (Poll)
In a very close vote, Trevor Plouffe edged out Jeff Manship with Chris Parmelee not far behind. Normally, I will remove players who do not receive 5%, but DJ Romero had 3% and comments indicated that a few people would vote for him in the next round, so I am keeping him in there. So, keep discussing your choices:
- Danny Valencia, 3B
- Ben Revere, OF
- Aaron Hicks, OF
- Angel Morales, OF
- Wilson Ramos, C
- Jose Mijares, LH RP
- Anthony Swarzak, RHP
- Tyler Robertson, LHP
- Deolis Guerra, RHP
- Luke Hughes, 3B/2B/OF/DH
- Shooter Hunt, RHP
- Kevin Mulvey, RHP
- Trevor Plouffe, IF
Off the ballot (for this round) - David Bromberg, Dustin Martin
On the ballot - Erik Lis, Anthony Slama and Steve Tolleson
Again, please vote for the player that you think is the Twins top prospect among those remaining on the ballot. Poll will be up approximately 24 hours. Please vote, but also discuss your selection and the players available. Finally, if there are names you feel should be added to a ballot, mention them as well.
Again, if you have any questions or want to do some research on any of the prospects mentioned, one starting point might be http://www.sethspeaks.net/100208.htm. That is my personal Top 10 list, and it has links to all of my top 50 choices.

I voted for Gutierrez....
yet again.
I just think his upside is too much to ignore.
Switched...
I went with Manship this time, but in my rankings I had Gutierrez at 10, so that case can be made… and last time I voted for Tosoni, cuz this is a good place for him.
How did Plouffe win?
Last I checked, it was a three-way tie between Plouffe, Manship and Parmelee.

Must have made a late kick

I went with Manship this time
He is identical to Delaney, so what’s the difference? After Delaney I’ll go Tosoni…just to ease Roger’s mind. :)

Difference?
One is a starter, one is a reliever.
One has a good slider, the other has a great curveball.
Lots of differences
One is a year younger (Manship).
One is three inches taller and is listed at 70 pounds heavier (Delaney). Does Manship really only weigh 165 pounds?
Really, they’re very different guys. The two guys who are really similar on the list are Slama and Delaney. I have a hard time deciding which I like better. If I had to choose, I would pick Slama just because he strikes out so many hitters (around 40% of batters faced) and he hardly walks anyone (around 9% of batters faced). By contrast, Delaney strikes out about 30% of batters faced while walking slightly fewer.

Darn it
That is completely my bad. I confused Manship and Slama…somehow.
I’ll keep my vote the same anyway. Thanks for the catch, guys.

Keep voting for Tosoni...
…until he gets in one of these times. See lots of votes for Parmalee, but what are the Twins telling us when Parmalee was in Beloit in 2007 and Tosoni was in Elizabethton. When this season began, Parmalee was back at Beloit and Tosoni was in Ft. Myers and hitting very well?
Uffdah...
Spoken like a true Norwegian!

Age and power
I rate Parmelee a little higher than Tosoni because he’s a year younger and he has good power numbers. Tosoni has the body to develop power, but he hasn’t shown it yet. Parmelee has shown very good power at a young age. The Twins just don’t have a lot of guys in his class. Most of the hitters in the Twins system are slashers. The primary exceptions are Parmelee, Ramos, and Morales. Parmelee is the only guy not yet rated who stands out in that much-needed tool. For that reason, if we have a run-off between Manship and Parmelee, I’ll pick Parmelee.

Manship vs. McCardell
I have been voting consistently for McCardell rather than Manship because I thought McCardell had a better year at his level than Manship did. However, looking at their numbers, Manship had a better year at Beloit a year younger than McCardell. So I will vote for Manship after Parmelee and then revert to McCardell after that.
McCardell at Beloit
Age 23 9-4 2.86ERA 22G 135.1IP 10HR 25BB 139SO 1.00WHIP 2.99FIP
Manship at Beloit
Age 22 7-1 1.51ERA 13G 77.2IP 4HR 9BB 77SO 0.77WHIP 2.40FIP
At some point, I have to give a nod to Delaney and Slama, but, all things considered, I typically don’t rate relievers all that highly. The only exceptions are relievers who have proven it on the big stage but are still prospects, e.g. Mijares.

Still think Gutierrez...
should be the guy here.
His upside is a lot better than Manship’s, and I wouldn’t doubt that their ETA’s are similar.
I don’t see the logic in going with Manship over Gutierrez at all.
My only thing there....
…is that we have yet to see how Gutierrez responds to being converted back to a starter next year. I have predicted elsewhere that I thought he could make it up to Rochester or even the Twins next year. But that’s the best case scenario. The worst case is he struggles as a starter and he has to be turned back into a reliever. That uncertainty is what keeps me from voting for him. But if he does as I expect next year, he could vault into my top five easily.

Ya...
I can understand that, but I just don’t like the upside of Manship. He’s a 4th/5th starter at best to me on this team.
And Parmelee, who I like, has just as many questions as Gutierrez really.
That’s my take at least.
Manship is all about control
He doesn’t have top-of-the-rotation stuff. But he has good control of four pitches. That’s pretty rare. Look at how well Slowey did with comparable stuff and control.
Also, Manship’s AA numbers really hurt him. Looking more closely, he had Swarzak’s disease. That is, his defense let him down, surrendering a .350 BABIP. His FIP was actually OK: 4.01.

expectations of a 14th best rated prospect
at this point there aren’t too many prospects who are future #1 starters as their 14th best prospect. that would be a deep farm system. I would expect most prospects from this point on to be either a solid starter 3 4or 5 reliever, strater, or backup in the field. I don’t doubt that there are players in rookie league or A ball that will devlop into that status. Luke Hughes stock went up this year and Blackburn the year before.
