Twins Prospect #17 (Poll)
Carlos Gutierrez was the selection for the Twins #16 prospect. The last couple have been relatively easy votes, so we are now at a point where I am very curious who should be included. I've been rather surprised by some people's low vote totals, so do I put more new names? Do I only have 7 or 8 on the ballot? Any other thoughts? So, keep discussing your choices and who should be added:
- Danny Valencia, 3B
- Ben Revere, OF
- Aaron Hicks, OF
- Angel Morales, OF
- Wilson Ramos, C
- Jose Mijares, LH RP
- Anthony Swarzak, RHP
- Tyler Robertson, LHP
- Deolis Guerra, RHP
- Luke Hughes, 3B/2B/OF/DH
- Shooter Hunt, RHP
- Kevin Mulvey, RHP
- Trevor Plouffe, IF
- Jeff Manship, RHP
- Chris Parmelee, 1B/OF
- Carlos Gutierrez, RHP
Off the ballot (for this round) - Alex Burnett, Brian Dinkelman, Dustin Martin, Dan Osterbrook
On the ballot - Brian Duensing, Philip Humber, Mike McCardell, Steve Singleton, Anthony Slama
Again, please vote for the player that you think is the Twins top prospect among those remaining on the ballot. Poll will be up approximately 24 hours. Please vote, but also discuss your selection and the players available. Finally, if there are names you feel should be added to a ballot, mention them as well.
Again, if you have any questions or want to do some research on any of the prospects mentioned, one starting point might be http://www.sethspeaks.net/100208.htm. That is my personal Top 10 list, and it has links to all of my top 50 choices.

Tosoni Time
although a strong argument could be made for McCardell too.
I agree

I didn't realize Humber was still an option...
so I went with him.
He’s a major league, starting caliber pitcher, already. He’s a “sure” thing I think to be that caliber. So that outweighs the other options on this list for me at this point.
sure thing?
He’s a sure thing what?
We had this discussion previously, I think… Should we have Randy Ruiz and Matt Macri, maybe Ryan Jorgenson, Jose Morales, Carmen Cali, and those types on here?
I think Humber makes the team, but I don’t know if I’d call him a sure anything.
I wouldn't lump Humber in with those guys
He’s a former number 3 overall pick who has struggled at times. But he was dominant down the stretch in Rochester. I think he turned it around when he made some mechanical adjustments that got him throwing like he did before the surgery. If that’s the Philip Humber we can expect, he’d be rated much higher. But I for one expect some regression as he adjusts to the majors. So I have him ranked just behind Mulvey in my list.
Used correctly, he wouldn’t just make the team. He’d be a solid bullpen asset for this club. He’s only 25. He’s got a bright future. I also voted for him here, despite my temptation to vote for McCardell, Tosoni and Slama. I would have voted for him sooner but he just hasn’t been on the ballot all that much.

Just looking at the names, I think you see quite a few major league ‘contributors.’ But when thinking about significant upside, three names jumped out for me—Tosoni, Bromberg, and my vote this round, McCardell.
I was surprised Humber was still there as well. Kind of forgot about him. For some reason, I am in the camp that thinks (and I might be alone) that we haven’t seen the best of him, and he might just be a pleasant surprise. Maybe not an ace, but maybe more than a long reliever/#5 starter. He was a #3 overall pick…
interesting
“more than a long reliever/#5 starter”
One – that’s what we (ok, I) said about Nick Blackburn last year, and it may still be right. But these lists are about upside/ceiling… If you believe Humber’s upside is 5th starter/long reliever, then you have to ask yourself what you believe the upside of McCardell or Bromberg is… if you think they’re even #3 or #4 types, doesn’t that make them better prospects?
Agree Totally
and voted for McCardell with Bromberg second. I probably won’t vote for Humber for a few more picks, because I don’t have super high hopes he’ll reattain that #3 pick overall talent, or at least I think there is less chance of that happening vs. McCardell or Bromberg exceeding him. I would say I do have a slight and perhaps unfounded hope that Humber can in fact be more than just a long reliever.
Humber
Humber seems to be our 6th 7th starter next year on the pecking order. I think he can be a usefull pitcher/long reliever or AAAA pitcher (not a misprint) but Seth and Han Joelo are right to a point about upside. Upside in rookie leqague can easily be downgraded IMO alot more than an established AA or AAA prospect with less upside but a AA or A player who has high upside will beat out an average established prospect at AAA. I went with McCardell this time. Bromberg, Tolleson, Tosini, Martin, Slama and Delaney are my next few preferences in no particular order.
Went with Tosoni...
…with Tolleson as my second choice. Believe that of this group, Tosoni has the highest up side (although McCardell could be special as well) with it extremely likely that at least one of the two relievers will have a solid career in the bullpen..or possibly both.
Can Tolleson Play SS?
Wading into dreaded small sample size waters, Tolleson is looking good in the AFL, as is Slama. I wonder what the story was with Slama/Delaney at Ft. Myers. It almost seems like they were told one had to stay and one got to go to New Britain, and Slama lost the coin flip.
How dominant do you think Humber could have been as an A-ball reliever? What is he, a year older than those guys.
At any rate, I’m thinking Tolleson has a good chance to make the Twins roster in some capacity.
...
Delaney ended last year in Ft. Myers, so he was the obvious choice to move up first. I thought Slama would take over closer duties for awhile and then move up, but shocked that he never did.
I definitely think Tolleson will make it in some role, some time.
Slama named minor league pitcher of the year
Combined with his stint in the AFL, that puts him ahead of Delaney in my book.

Pridie
How can he be overlooked by so many? Yes he K’s quite a bit, but he does everything else far above average (D, Speed, Power). I just can not see how anyone could look at the numbers and come to the conclusion that a Parmelee or a Hughes have shown more ability to be a superior major league player. If you haven’t really seen him play, you may not understand how extremely gifted of a defensive player he is.
