What Was the 2008 Payroll, Anyway?
Over recent weeks and months, the Twins’ 2008 payroll amount has been portrayed in various outlets to be a lower amount than what actually occurred. Most recently, even the Twins’ own website stated that the payroll was only $57 million.
I am by no means an apologist for the frugality of the organization, but the roster all year was considerably above the $57 million most often quoted. According to Cots Contracts, the Twins opening day 25-man roster totaled $59.5 million in actual salaries. However, this did not include a $2 million incentive clause to Livan Hernandez based on innings pitched, and it did not include signing bonuses totaling $8.75 million to Justin Morneau and Michael Cuddyer. Of course, it also did not include amounts paid to minor league call-ups and players traded for during the year.
Shown below is an estimate of the actual payroll for 2008. Most of the information was obtained from Cot’s Baseball Contracts. Other amounts for minor-league call-ups are estimated based on service time and days on the active roster.
The total payout is in the neighborhood of $70 million, which is not all that different from the amount paid in 2007, when the likes of Johan Santana and Torii Hunter were on the roster, and a far cry from the $57 million being reported in various outlets.
All amounts below are in $Millions.

because salaries only go up
and these days it seems they only go up for professional ball players…
does this mean the Twins in fact do not have tons of money for next year?

Some of this is non-recurring
The $8 million in signing bonuses is a one-time hit, and it’s there largely because the Twins were so much under budget this year (at least originally) – according to reports I’d read, they were initially planning on a $70M opening-day payroll. I’d guess that budget assumed a few million of in-season acquisitions, so my guess is that they were still under budget even with the signing bonuses.
Speaking of opening-day payroll, I think that’s what the $57 million figure refers to – it’s simply the combined salaries of everyone on the roster when the season started, not counting bonuses. The numbers actually work that way, once you subtract Livan’s innings bonuses from the $58 million figure above. Lazy, sure, but I don’t think it’s anything nefarious – generally that’s how payrolls are calculated for everyone, even when playing the “Twins are cheap!” card.

accounting tricks
“Gross expenses”, “payroll”, “salaries”… …I am sure you can think of a few more terms that accountant types and CEOs use at different times to imply different things. Those signing bonuses don’t count under one of those terms, therfore that term is used to imply the youthful, lunchbucket, whoa is us, small market team hardships, whenever that is the type of image management wants to portray.
Anyway, as for ‘tons of money for next year’ didn’t the twins have the highest attendance since ’92?

There's plenty of room...
… assuming they don’t do something silly, like giving a big raise to Punto or signing Livan again. Here’s 25 guys on the roster now:
Starters
Baker 0.45
Liriano 0.45
Slowey 0.42
Blackburn 0.42
Perkins 0.45
Bullpen
Nathan 11.25 (Contract)
Neshek 0.45
Crain 1.70 (Contract)
Guerrier 1.50 (Arbitration)
Breslow 0.42
Bonser 0.45
Mijares 0.40
Line-up
Mauer 10.50
Morneau 10.60
Casilla 0.42
Harris 0.45
Tolbert 0.42
Span 0.41
Gomez 0.42
Young 0.90 (estimated)
Kubel 4.00 (Arbitration)
Bench
Redmond 0.95
Tolbert 0.42
Buscher 0.42
Cuddyer 6.75
Other – Lamb 3.00
Total – $58 million & some change.
Assuming the payroll is $70-$75 million, there’s room to go shopping for a third baseman or a shortstop, and even to give a signing bonus or two for a long-term contract extension (Baker, Kubel?).

But the point of the post was...
… that even if a hack like me can do 45 minutes of research to come up with this, we should expect more accurate reporting from the likes of the Twins own website, etc.

I estimated this about three weeks ago or so...
…and the total I came up with was about $56.6 million for next season, including raises in salaries and arbitration and Mike Lamb’s $3 mil. It also accounts for 20 of 25 roster spots.

There's even more room than that actually....
especially with the new stadium revenues kicking this year (season tickets/suites are being sold, etc.).
If they want to, they can easily up payroll to around $90 M this season. It was basically $75-77 M in 2007 so that’s not a big jump at all with the new stadium.
Plenty of room in the budget for both a big signing (either SS or 3b) and a FEW longterm extensions. Personally, I’d sign all of Kubel, Liriano, Baker, and Mauer longterm this offseason. Their value will only rise.

I can’t imagine the Twins with an ‘average’ payroll…
