Ponder This
Twinsfannatnicks.com and Baseball musings have been puzzling this
I don't think Wigginton would be a terrible acquisition at the right price, but he doesn't get me particularly excited. The Twins entered this offseason with a sizable surplus in their budget and it will be unfortunate if they end up sitting on their excess rather than using it to add players who can help them win, but having the money to sign Wigginton is not reason enough to sign him. When all aspects of his game are taken into account, I don't think he adds much to this club. Even if it's not particularly exciting, sometimes holding steady makes sense.
If the Red Sox do sign Teixeira, maybe the Twins would use that surplus to acquire Lowell or Youkilis from Boston.
I wouldnt be against Acquiring Lowell or Youkilis...What do you guys think?

Lets see .. Lowell or Youkilis
I seriously doubt that the Red Sox would trade Youkilis unless it was for far more then any team would want to give up. The logical move would be to trade Lowell and his two remaining years on his contract. The problem they will have is that teams interested in Lowell will want to make sure he is 100% healthy from his back problems that caused him to miss some time during the playoffs last year. They may have to wait until after spring training to start to even try to move him. I would love to have a guy like Youkilis batting between Mauer and Morneau as he definitely has an impact bat with good defense at third base. However the Red Sox are going to want the entire farm for him and knowing the Twins they just won’t do it.

Hate Youk.
I like Lowell though, so it would be cool to have him. Not sure he is what we are looking for right now though, especially with injury concerns.

It ain't even Christmas yet
One thing people forget is that the baseball season is a long one, and some teams and players become more willing to move as the season goes along.
It is not a bad strategy for the Twins to stand pat with extra payroll and a few needs and see what becomes available. We all know that around July 25th, a lot of pending FA suddenly become available, especially bullpen pitchers.
Of course, that assumes the Twins are still in the race at that point.
Just to say that going to ST like they are now, sorting out the outfield, looking at the infield, considering their pitching staff, there will be plenty of time to make moves once the season starts.

Lowell
If health, he’s a good fit. The Twins need someone for two years and no more. He’s signed through 2010 at $12 million a year, which is a steep price for an injury risk. I could see something for Spring Training, where you watch the guy play before you pull a deal. But he fits almost as well as Beltre and would probably cost less in terms of players.

Lowell injury risk
Yes he had some injury problems this year but still played 113 games and has played 150+ in the previous 4 seasons. I’m not overly concerned about his injury risk. He’s a better defender than what we have or what’s available (except Beltre) and like others have said, he’d cost less in players. I think if we gave a couple of decent prospects we could even get Boston to pick up a bit of the tab.
That said, I’d love for the Twins to go after Youkilis but I don’t see him being available at all. He’d cost us a ton and I have to wonder if his power is sustainable. He’ll have a damn good OBP but I’m not going to be expecting 30 homers from him every year. I also figure there’s a reason he’s been at 1B most of the time the last 3 seasons. He may be a gold glover there but I wonder how he’d be if they played him consistently at 3B. I think he’d cost more than he’s worth and Lowell might be available at a bargain given his injury, age, and price.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

Yep
I’d rather have Lowell at $12M each of the next two years than Wigginton at $7M+ for each of the next three years. The gap defensively is large, probably over 10 runs, and offensively the two are in the same ballpark. Lowell with more experience and upside, but with more injury risk.

of course, but why would they ever do something?

If they sign Teixeira
They would move Youk to third and trade Lowell

They couldn't get takers...
…until Lowell proved he was healthy. At that time, from a Sox standpoint – from a Branch Rickey standpoint – this is how you stay in contention year after year. Peel off those old bills in exchange for some fresh ones.
So this is the move to make for the Sox.
The team that gets the wrinkled bills, well, good luck to them.

Red Sox out of the Tex bidding, supposedly
Henry: Red Sox are outbid on Teixeira
I think this is a negotiating ploy, don’t believe either LA or Washington have topped Boston’s supposed 8 year / $184M offer. They could top the offer, but I think Boston is calling Scott Boras’ bluff.
