Hanley Ramirez a Twin???
I know I know, not gonna happen right? I agree, there is almost no way this could work out but after seeing this article I thought why not the Twins. He plays at a position of need for the Twins and is signed through 2014. I am of the opinion that the Twins should strike while the iron is hot and try to build a team around the M and M boys and this young pitching staff that can truly compete for a title. A guy like Hanley Ramirez would do just that but he would not come cheap. What would the Twins be willing to give up that could possibly land him? Probably not enough but I think a package starting with either Slowey or Baker, then you put in at least two other top pitching prospects like Manship/Swarzak/Robertson and then for good measure figure you've got to add a guy like Ben Revere or Wilson Ramos and possibly one more decent prospect in there.
Yes I realize this would gut our system but only in the areas that we have plenty of depth at. All of our starters have at least 5 more years of team control. Combine that with the abundance of other major league ready capable starters in Mulvey/Humber/Bonser etc. we should be able to have one or two of those guys step it up and replace whoever we lose from the rotation. While we would likely drop off in our starting pitching quality some we would improve dramatically offensively. We also have 3 young major league ready outfielders in Young, Gomez, and Span that will be under team control for 4 or 5 years each.
So what would it take. I think a package I would start with to let them know the Twins are serious would be something like Slowey/Revere/Manship/Robertson. I would definitely consider switching in Span, Young, or Baker if need be and to be honest I would even think the Twins would have to consider Liriano being part of the package if it let them downgrade the prospects included significantly.
Like I said before, I know not gonna happen right? Well probably not but damn I would love to see Bill Smith take a shot.

Might as well try
Twins management would be stupid not to ask what it would take. Still, if the Marlins are hesitant to trade him to the Red Sox, who can offer Ellsbury, Bucholtz, Masterson, Lowrie, etc, I’m not sure what the Twins would offer.
Still, might as well ask if Baker, Swarzak, Revere and Hughes would do it.

Hanley Ramirez
I talked about this right after the season ended and I am still hoping that Bill Smith at least makes a call to them. We know that we have the talent to trade with them. I think that we have enough without giving up Baker, and Liriano. I would also hate to see us give up Ramos as we are going to need him in a couple of years and he just could be our next great hitter. We have a lot of outfield minor league depth and Ramirez for the next 5 years is so worth the loss of a Revere. Ramirez with Mauer, and Morneau for the next few years would be wonderful to see for any Twins fan!

Ramirez ehh?
Probably start with Aaron Hicks, Span or Gomez or Young, Blackburn, Tolbert and Swarzak (or another solid pitching prospect.
Tolbert or Harris to replace Ramirez (this is a throw in)
One of the Twins OF (I would think Young but he will be artibitration eligible next year as Span or Gomez will not)
Hicks cause he’s a kick ass prospect
Blackburn cause he can throw some innings and is a groundball pitcher and has 5 years to FA.
I was thinking Swarzak or another pitcher prospect but I could see Ramos going as the Marlins look thin at C. I don’t know what they have in the minors.
That is alot to give up. and it puts Punto at third platooning with Buscher if Harris is taken by Florida. But this is what I imagine it would take. Or they could ask for Slowey instead of Blackburn and we could keep that last prospect. When finding the players I offered in this post, I picked players who have more time till FA then others. That is why you don’t see Baker or Liriano in there. Florida will operate cheaply until they get a new stadium and the economy picks up down there.

?
Would Ramirez be moved to 3rd?
I remember hearing that his defense isn’t that great. of course that was on T.V.

Anybody but Hicks, Baker and Liriano
Well, Nathan, Mauer and Morneau, of course.

Ramirez' D is pretty good...
at least according to this.
http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2008/11/8/656639/2008-ss-defense-by-pmr
Name Actual Outs Expected Outs Diff.
Hardy 477 466 +15
Ramirez 472 463 +9
Punto 227 224 +3
Harris 159 171 -12
Bartlett 380 373 +7
According to this, he’s roughly on a par with Bartlett, after adjusting for playing time. He’s considerably better than Punto and a huge upgrade over Harris. But Hardy would still be a better (and cheaper) choice.

Punto, Ramirez and Bartlett
are all about the same on a per play basis according to the same site. There’s a gap, but I would not consider Ramirez to be “considerably better” than Punto when playing time is considered.
Ramirez: 6.83 runs / 4000
Punto: 5.41 runs / 4000
Bartlett: 6.85 runs / 4000
Your basic point is spot on, Ramirez was vastly improved defensively last year. No longer a liability…

the marlins trading hanley ramirez is more funny that delmon young back to the rays
any team would have to give up a star player(maybe a couple of them) and top prospects. no way they trade hanley yet, maybe in 2013 or so when he is about to become a Free agent.
MLB-Rays,Marlins,Twins, and Reds
NFL-Vikings,Lions(i know Shut up),texans, and Bills
NBA-Timberwolves(also shut up),Cavilers(bye bye LeBron in '10)
NHL- Wild and Penguins
College-Gophers,Gators,Longhorns and Irish.
all of the above mentioned teams are in order by my favorites

I originally wrote “we already have A starting shortstop,” but then realized that there wasn’t A starting-caliber shotstop on the whole roster.

On-topic...
I would love it, but I just don’t see it happening.
