As the cuts continue from the Twins training camp, one must look to where all these bodies will be going. The majority, to Rochester.
Liriano or Perkins will probably start the season there.
The Twins signed the following guys to give them depth: Casey Daigle, Zach Day, Randy Keisler, Landon Jacobsen, Heath Totten, Ben Julianel, Mariano Gomez. Any of whom could end up at AA, too.
Will R.A. Dickey come back?
They have such stalwarts returning for future looks: Brian Duensing, Bobby Korecky, Ricky Barrett, Brian Bass, Armando Gabino, Carmen Cali, Julio DePaula, Jay Sawatski...not to mention Kevin Mulvey and Anthony Swarzak. And Jason Miller was resigned. Whew!
It looks like catching will be done by Jose Morales and Eli Whiteside, although Drew Butera or Ryan Jorgenson could also make the grade.
Outfield has the loser of the Span/Gomez war, and if the Twins keep another infielder, Jason Pridie will be here. Brian Roberts deserves a call up to AAA. If not to start the season, sometime during the season. Doug Deeds and Darnel McDonald round out the outfielders, along with Jon Knott. Of course, Garrett Guzman could return.
The infield situation is a mess. Randy Ruiz, Brock Peterson and Garrett Jones are 1Bmen or Dhing (with Deeds). Then you have the stackup up Alejandro Machado, Matt Tolbert, Alexi Casilla, Matt Macri, Howie Clark, Tommy Watkins, Chris Basak, Brian Buscher. Any other reasoning would have seen Trevor Plouffe, Felix Molina, Luke Hughes and Matt Moses also starting at AAA this season.
And who will these guys push out of AA that is deserving. 19 pitchers. 4 catchers. 7 outfielders. 15 infielders. 45 possible players. And don't AAA and AA play with less than 25-man rosters?
