Just off the wire at mlb.com:
"Twins set to go with Harris at second
Punto will now be utilized as backup infielder this season"
It looks as if Harris has been given the nod, but for those of you that still delusionally defy logic by thinking this somehow means Punto won't see many at bats, or that the Twins lineup has somehow transmogrified itself into an actual offense...
Punto had quite a few at bats this Spring and I feel pretty certain that is exactly how Gardy will use him this season. Even if there isn't a significant injury (or two) to the left side of the infield.
So does Punto given this quote:
""It's a role I'm familiar with, so I know how to do the utility guy," Punto said. "But it's something where it doesn't have to be a permanent thing. I've played for [Gardenhire] for four years now, and I know that he's going to play the hot hand."
or this quote from Gardenhire:
"Believe me, he'll get used quite a bit," Gardenhire said. "I like to see him out on the field."
While Punto hasn't shown much this Spring (.125, .205, .175 ouch) in 40 at bats, his replacement so far this Spring kinda makes one long for the good old days of Luis Rivas.
Harris: .245, .275, .306 (in only 49 at bats) with some less than stellar defense.
While Harris' history shows that he'll probably do just fine behind the plate this year, what happens when he gets injured?
Now just imagine if the 32yr. old Lamb goes down for any significant amount of time (it could happen).
