2008 Player Budget

Well, this will be my first post.  Somehow will have to learn how to write these in this new system.  Was hoping there is a place that would explain it, but haven't been able to find it.  So this may be a mess.  I will also include years of service for players who have not reached free agent status.  This is not indicated as a percentage, rather 1.031 means one year + 31 days.

Pitchers:
Name Service Time 2008 Salary
Boof Bonser 1.102 $425,000 (E)
Scott Baker 1.128 $425,000 (E)
Kevin Slowey 0.063 $400,000 (E)
Livan Hernandez $5,000,000
Nick Blackburn 0.028 $390,000
Francisco Liriano 2.031 $410,000 (X)
Joe Nathan $11,250,000
Jesse Crain 3.064 $1,050,000
Matt Guerrier 3.056 $950,000
Juan Rincon 5.066 $1,000,000
Dennys Reyes $1,000,000
Pat Neshek 1.087 $425,000 (E)
Brian Bass 0.000 $390,000 (M)
Catchers:
Name Service Time 2008 Salary
Joe Mauer 4.000 $6,250,000
Mike Redmond $950,000
Infield:
Name Service Time 2008 Salary
Justin Morneau 3.168 $13,400,000
Nick Punto 5.051 $2,400,000
Brendan Harris 1.112 $425,000
Adam Everett $3,000,000
Matt Tolbert 0.000 $390,000
Mike Lamb $3,500,000
Outfield:
Name Service Time 2008 Salary
Michael Cuddyer 4.157 $7,750,000
Jason Kubel 3.009 $1,300,000
Craig Monroe 5.105 $3,820,000
Delmon Young 1.034 $700,000
Carlos Gomez 0.141 $400,000 (E)
Total Budget $68,875,000

(E) Estimate

(M) Minimum

(X) I have assumed that Francisco Liriano has signed a one-way contract and will be paid his major league salary while in the minors.  When he returns, unless there are other injuries, one of the other pitchers (Blackburn, Bass, ?) will be sent down which will reduce the overall budget.

This budget doesn not include bonuses, nor the salaries of players brought up to replace players placed on the DL.

This was very disappointing...

...and I apologize for the mess. Unfortunately, this site got changed and some of us aren't as computer savvy as others and haven't been able to figure out how to make it work. Nor was I able to find anyplace that explains it. Was hoping that this could be a test for next week when I was set to begin my minor league posts. If I cannot find out how to make this work...guess I won't be able to do my weekly report because I don't want to publish something that is a mess. If anyone knows where to find out how to make this work...please let me know. Thanks

Jesse or CMath...

...if you can go into this post and edit it so that it looks good, please do so. Thanks

I've submitted

a question asking if a table function can be added to FanPosts. You'd have to know how many columns and rows you'd want to use, but you'd have a nice standard format that would come out easy to read.

I'll play with HTML to see if I can fix the table, Roger. Thanks!

Ok wow

Looks like it's correct generally, but it looks like something got messed up...I'll continue to work on it.

That floating $425,000 (E) should be Neshek's...for example. Yikes.

Looks like I have

most of the kinds sorted out...although it's clear my HTML skills aren't the best, either.

Have you tried cut and paste from a "word" doc?

I'll try that here to see what happens, I'm not real computer savvy myself.

Liriano 9 wins 7 losses
Bonser 11wins 12 losses
Baker 12 wins 9 losses
Slowey 8 wins 9 losses
Hernandez 11 wins 11 losses

Bullpen 19 wins 20 losses

Oooh, that didn't work well either.

Thanks guys,

Jesse, if you can get more info on tables, I would appreciate it. If not, will work on next weeks report which will be difficult as it would usually be the beginning rosters. Maybe do in a different format or something. After that, each week's won't be to much of a problem. You will have to forgive me, but I don't deal with change very well and am hesitant to try to new things! Oh well, guess this ole dawg will have to learn a new trick!

Budget will be close to last year...

...It now looks like this year will end up relatively close to last year after callups, bonuses, etc. May be a few million down, but Mr. Smith has done an excellent job, IMO, using this year's savings to get several players signed to nice long-term contracts. Now, onto the season and the battle for the playoffs that I believe won't be easy...but we aren't out of the hunt yet!

Draft Bonuses

I'm a little dissapointed. I guess I thought we would still be a little lower than this. I'm hoping that, with some inflation over last year, our total budget still leaves room to add to our draft budget. I'd really like to see the Twins go for a pitching or infield prospect using above slot money. Especially a possible top of the order college pitcher who could be into the majors in the by 2010 or 2011 (though not necessarily at the top of our order by then, obviously).

Anybody know where we are going to be drafting this year in the first and second rounds?

Bill Smith...

...used nearly $14.0mm to front load the three new contracts and save $$$ in future years. With 3 picks in what I think is the top 32-33, they will need to spend more on draft picks this year and there are indications that Bill Smith does run the ship a bit different, so hopefully you are right. Another place to spend a million or two could be in going hard after two or three of the top prospects in Venezuela and the Dominican Republic.
