Hosanna!
"He had a big night," Gardenhire said of Kubel, who finished with six RBI. "I've always said, I really believe this guy can hit. And you know what? He's going to get plenty of opportunities this year. He had 450 [plate appearances] last year, and I think he's going to get more than that this year.
Oh God, thank you, yes. Put it on the books now, Gardenhire just said more than 450 PA's for Kubel this year. I feel an enormous worry lifted off my shoulders.
Now go read Jesse's post below. It's an ACTUAL entry. With, you know, words, and research and stuff. That Jesse, he sure writes English good...

The force is strong with this one
Seriously, go follow the link to the article. He's hitting with his eyes closed. Yoda would love the passive approach (playing dead at the plate) that Kubel takes. This explains why he never appears to be exterting himself. Gardy just doesn't appreciate the Jedi way.
snolls, you beat me to it!!!!!
While it's the first time I can recall seeing a picture of a hitter's eyes being closed right after contact, I suspect it's not that unusual.
I've read (and seen pictures) that lots of golfers have their eyes closed when they make contact with the ball; if mine don't close, they at least squint, because I've been hit in the area of the eyes with dirt from the divot before (it doesn't get all the way into the eye).
Eyes closed
I have pictures of me hitting dingers with my eyes closed in KCYO baseball. I of course watched the ball until it was in the hitting zone, but once I made contact with the ball and it had that home run feel, I must have instinctually closed my eyes, as I do at other euphoric moments. If you look at Kubel's face, you'll notice other symptoms of euphoria. Notice the look of peace and tranquility.
There are few experiences that top hitting a home run. Having a big fish on the line. Crossing the finish line first in a key race. And of course, intimacy with my wife. Killer used to say it feels like you're so light you can fly.
