Offense
This team needs to tee off on this guy tonight. The offense has not been clicking as of late and has no extra-base power mojo working right now. Young is going to have to have a game sooner or later because Justin got lucky being the hero the other day and is going to need some protection pretty quickly.
Gardenhire's major league career: Banjo hitting, futility infielder who couldn't lick it.
Rick Anderson's major league career: Strikethrower who never made it happen his sub 90's fastball.

Nice Double
Delmon takes a nice rip off the top of the wall, leading to the first run. 1-0 Twins!

Kubel
On gameday it seemed like he got a fat pitch and took it deep to the cavernous part of McAfee Coliseum. Anyone see it? Good poke? Just missed?

Kubel hit
It was a nice solid hit to deep center. If it wasnt hit to straight away center its probably gone.

Abreu Grand Slam
Sox losing 6-3 after Abreu’s slam! One of the few games I find myself rooting for the yanks. Also have Wang on my fantasy team so this is very nice :)

Blanton
4 innings complete, 42 pitches, 10 pitches an inning. When is team going to get into the 21st century and start waking up to the value of a walk or pitch selection at the very least. C’mon Vavra.

Dick and Bert
are probably conversating about how much they enjoy pitchers duels and close games and how this is Twins baseball at it’s finest.

US Bank Grand Slam promotion?
Anybody else listening on the radio and notice the US Bank Grand Slam promotion? The broadcasters pick a name from a list of registrants, and if the Twins hit a grand slam in the fourth inning of the game, the drawn contestant wins $10,000.
Expected payout for this promotion? No more than $10,000 and most likely nothing, based on the past seven years of Twins history:
2007 – Twins hit 6 grand slams (3 by Hunter, 1 by Morneau, 1 by Kubel, 1 by Mauer); one (Kubel) in the fourth
2006 – Twins hit 7 grand slams (2 by Hunter, 2 by Cuddyer, 1 by Morneau, 1 by Kubel, 1 by Bautista); none in the fourth
2005 – Twins hit 2 grand slams (1 by Hunter, 1 by Morneau); none in the fourth
2004 – Twins hit 2 grand slams (1 by LeCroy, 1 by Punto (!!)); none in the fourth
2003 – Twins hit 2 grand slams (both by Pierzynski); none in the fourth
2002 – Twins hit 3 grand slams (1 by Hunter, 1 by Jones, 1 by Cuddyer); none in the fourth
2001 – Twins hit 4 grand slams (1 by Hunter, 1 by Jones, 1 by Koskie, 1 by Guzman); one (Koskie) in the fourth
So in five of the past seven seasons, the Twins hit no slams in the fourth, and in the other two seasons, they hit only one in the fourth.
(Kubel’s slam against Chicago earlier this year was in the 6th, for the record.)

The 4th seems like kind of an unlikely inning for a GS, too
IIRC, after the 1st inning, the leadoff hitter appears most often in the 3rd. So most of the time you’re probably going to have to get some combination of the 2-3-4-5 or 3-4-5-6 hitters to load the bases and then have someone in the bottom of the order hit the GS. Highly unlikely with this team.

Blanton
Does get beat up but still 60 pitches in 5 innings, 12 pitches an inning…. Your luck will run out boys if you don’t figure out how to make pitchers work.

Monroe is the man this inning
But I still say we drop him and no-arm Kubel for Frankie T

I wonder if Joe Nathan knows about that radio commercial
about his facial tics. The announcer sounds so mocking toward him—if it were about me I think it would sting a little. Then again, he’s probably seen so much tape of himself that he just isn’t self-conscious about it

Lets see what Kubes can do
He’s 3 times as expensive as Frank Thomas, lets see him come through big here against Embree

How did we not score with runners on 2nd and 3rd, no outs?
Really Gomez? Four strikeouts in one game? Joe Nathan should get to punch you in the arm after he saves the game.

Frank Thomas could teach Gomez how to take pitches
just let him in the clubhouse!

Great win
good to see Kubel get some bloop hits, I remember he had some bad luck last year with solid hits.

Pulled out
Pulled out a nice win against a team much like us. Good one.

I think we’ve found a new nickname for Punto.

Radio post-game
I was ticked a bit by the radio post game interview between Gladden and Monroe. Paraphrased, it went something like this:
Gladden: The numbers show you do pretty well against Blanton. Do you see his pitches better or is there something about him that helps you?
Monroe: I really have no idea. I was just glad to get out there and contribute.
A good reminder not to put too much into Small Sample Size Theater (SSST), as well as that, despite the venom we sometimes like to direct at individual players, there really are no bad guys in the home clubhouse. Monroe himself, at least for the moment, is now one of my favorite Twins.
(Oh, and go ahead and read into that the thought that the front office would be INSANE to sign Frank Thomas.)
