Liriano's AAA start
Here is Frankie's line from tonight's Red Wing's start against Norfolk:
4IP 5H 3R 3ER 3BB 3SO 0HR 88 pitches, 53 strikes.
He cruised through 3. But he got appeared to lose stamina in the fourth. According to the Strib, Gardy said; Liriano would replace Slowey on Sunday if he pitched well tonight, Slowey continued to struggle with his strained biceps, and Frankie pitched his bullpen on Thursday without incident. The first of those conditions is highly suspect at this point.
I don't know what they have in mind as a measure of success, whether it's just "he got his work in and is close to being able to throw 100 pitches" or "he pitched well enough to throw a quality start in the majors". If the former, I suppose you would call tonight a success. If the latter, I would say he needs more time. But if Slowey can't go on Sunday, I don't know what other choice they have. Of the other starters in AAA, only Kevin Mulvey has pitched well. But he's not on the 40-man roster.
Hopefully Slowey can take his start on Sunday. If he's going on the DL, we might be in for a rough patch in the fifth spot in the rotation as Frankie continues to work through stamina issues.

Not quite
I'm not sure I'd say Liriano "cruised" through the first three innings. I'm pretty sure his pitch count was over 60 when he entered the fourth.

No hitter
Yeah he threw a lot of pitches, but he had a no-hitter going. That might not be cruising, but it aint half bad. (And no Firpo, I don't mean average.)

40 Man Roster
By my count at the Twins web site, the currently only have 38 on their 40 man roster so they can call up anyone to replace Slowey without having to make another roster move.

Good point
Mulvey would likely be added at some point this year, so they could add him now without much risk.
BTW, a poster over at Joe C's blog who saw the game said it was 40 degrees tonight in Norfolk and Liriano had to sit through a couple of longish innings in the dugout. So it's conceivable he got a little stiff waiting. According to this guy, Liriano was lights out the first two innings, really pounding the strike zone. But he had control issues in the third and fourth.

I'll put this up; it's from MLB's site.
"No one wants to get hurt. There's nothing I can do about it," he said. "I'm just trying to get better and I'm working hard."
Rochester manager Stan Cliburn said he didn't think Liriano was real sharp.
"He got deep in counts," Cliburn said. "His fastball was good. The only thing good I saw is he's confident in his breaking ball."
