Reusse's Karma
A day or two after offering up yet another bloggers-suck-newspapers-4-evah column, Patrick tosses off a Twinkies column with zero player/coach quotes that couldn't be found in other sources (or in-game commentary on TV) and zero signs of access. In other words, it is a column that could have been written in his momma's basement with a bag of Cheetos and an MLB Pass...just like us dirty bloggers.
Best of all, since my laptop didn't land on my doorstep, I read Patrick for free on the internets.

long ago and far away
I used to really like Reusse. This is 10 years ago now, but I used to find him interesting, well written, and occasionally insightful. Now he is a bitter old man with nothing to report, but a by-line worth a pretty penny. Can’t he sell his by-line and photo to a young upstart (say, any of the administrators on this site) to use as a pen name? He could retreat into his old-folks home, and still collect half of his current salary. He clearly isn’t iterested in working, as he never interviews anybody.

My favorite part...
...of his anti-blog tirade was his shout-out to the Bird Whisperer, Charley Walters. Of all people to cite for the current state of sports journalism, he not only picks the guy whose column most closely resembles a blog, but a bad one at that.
As a Wolves fan, I can easily say that the best coverage of the team does not come from the 2 big newspapers. I think the same can be said about most aspects of the Twins coverage. I think the biggest strike against newspaper coverage is that if you watch a game on TV, the announcers give you 90% of the material that will show up in a newspaper. If you add in stuff like stats analysis and pre/post game wraps on blogs, you’re miles ahead of what you can have land at your doorstep. And let’s face it, no matter what happens to newspapers, someone is going to get a press pass and write about the team for free content. That’s not going anywhere.

And Saturday's column...
...he has already determined that the Twins “got taken” in the Garza-Young trade. Let me see, Young has been a Twin for 5 weeks and Garza has had a couple good starts after a stint on the DL. If only season championships would be determined as quickly, hell, we would have another Central Division crown.
I also find Reusse to be an interesting read once in awhile. But proclaiming this a bad trade after a few weeks into the season serves no purpose to anyone other than filling space.
