Gomez saw 8 pitches
And made Bannister show his fastball, cutter, cyrveball, and slider (according to gameday). That is a good leadoff PA even if he didn’t make it on base.

Casilla follows
with a seven pitch PA. Pretty good despite the two outs.

Blackburn follows
with a three pitch inning! How rare is that!?

Cuddyer
Well, it’s more or less a given that Boof has earned a demotion, despite being an integral part of the Twins’ plans two months ago. After Cuddyer strikes out with the bases loaded on a pitch three feet outside, I have to ask: can he PLEASE be the next surprise demotion?
In conclusion: ugh.
umm..
Cuddyer has 2 hits in three ABs…Cuddyer is a veteran and will battle through it…just because Cuddyer is struggling doesn’t mean that he must be demoted. Should we have demoted Morneau when he went 0-19 to start the season? Is that what you think?
0 -19 vs 18 - 92
One is clearly a slump, the other is an awfully bad month from a heavily relied upon hitter.
Nonetheless, I agree that even with as bad a month as Cuddyer has had he will bounce back and shouldn’t see any significant bench time just yet.

oh yeah,
a slugging percentage of .310 (.272 in May) doesn’t really do much to bolster his argument for playing every day.
by montanatwinsfan on May 27, 2008 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions
I never
said he should play everyday…I do support him sitting on the bench for a game or two but I don’t support the fact that he should be sent down. I hate when fans say things like that. Maybe Reddog should be sent down too since he hasnt come through in the clutch.
people are complaining about our middle infield batting
but did you see the Royal’s 2b, ss combo? Batting .132 and .167 those numbers make Cuddyer look good! ; )

Casilla only has 32 plate appearances
“Casilla is showing that he deserves to be up here.”
Apparently in a similar fashion to the way Mauer “showed” he needed to be demoted when he started the season 0-19?
by montanatwinsfan on May 27, 2008 10:20 PM EDT reply actions
actually
it was Morneau that went 0-19 but what I mean is that Casilla is making a statement and if he continues to hit as well as take away hits with diving plays he will be up here for a while. Plus I was being sarcastic with Morneau being demoted if you cant tell.
oops that's right I meant 32 AB not PA
therefore sign him up (if his arms arten’t too tired from swinging that bat so often) , because he makes up for both 2nd base and short stop… ...although I haven’t seen him turn the double play by fielding the ball at 6 and getting the first out by throwing it to himself at 4 yet. Nor have I seen him bat in both the 8th and 9th spots in the same lineup yet, but hey Bugs Bunny did it once didn’t he?

i don't think we're gonna send cuddles down, guys
But hey, how about Nick Blackburn tonight?

Yes, a damn fine outing.
Then again it is against a pretty weak hitting team. And I am not watching the game and have no idea whether he has looked good or looked Really Good?

Whew!
sounds like we dodged a small bullet there in the 8th with Lamb’s double play catch / throw to end the inning.
by montanatwinsfan on May 27, 2008 10:24 PM EDT reply actions
Blackburn's only thrown 85 pitches through 8
He’ll probably stay in to start the ninth. Go Blackburn!

gomez gets a key walk
he is getting better. Young on the other hand…
http://noblingblings.blogspot.com/
question,
is gomez “getting better” because a) he had a little more room for improvement (lower floor) than Delmon did? or b) he has been improving in an area which llows for learning (being more patient at the plate) while Delmon has done just fine overall for his age, but hasn’t improved much where we as fans would like because it is much harder (if not nearly impossible) to learn how to hit for more power?

uh, oh
batter hit by pitch, then a hit…

In the big picture,
or at least in the picture that is focused on the team rather than the player those last two outs are no more meaningful coming from Blackburn than they are by Nathan, but I bet Blackburn sure is disappointed that the balls in the 9th didn’t bounce his way so that he could get a complete game shutout.

Wow!
Teahen 0-7 against Nathan until tonight!

You've got to be kidding me.
Delmon Young and Joe Nathan combine to waste a great start from Blackburn – with just one pitch. That’s an impressive blown save right there.
sad isn't it?
another question:
Does Blackburn feel better during the post game shower with Nathan giving that one up than he would hade he given that one up?
by montanatwinsfan on May 27, 2008 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Did anyone watch/listen to what happened
on that inside the park homerun?
"I don't care about feelings." - Lou Piniella
Another question (don't stone me) :
what’s more interesting:
- a 3 run blown save on a single pitch from the reliever by an in the park homer; or
– a single half inning in only three pitches?

Young misplayed it
according to Gordon and Gladden. Misjudged the balls break, tried to dive for it at the last second and missed it.
Young apparently argued that it was foul.
Who saw the replay?
by montanatwinsfan on May 27, 2008 10:57 PM EDT reply actions
Here's what happened.
Young had a very long run to get there, and attempted to slide feet-first to catch the ball. His slide was too late, and the ball bounced about two feet in front of his glove. It was also about eight inches on the fair side of the line, clearly fair. With all of the spin on the ball, it caromed off the wall in foul territory and bounced straight back to the fence, about 30 feet from the foul pole, where it settled.
Young and several other Twins apparently argued that a fan touched the ball, but none even came close. Just a misplay by Young.
by Jon Marthaler on May 27, 2008 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Pictorial evidence
Here’s where Young attempted to slide to catch the ball; note the angle of the wall in foul territory. The ball spun, hit the wall, and caromed straight to the outfield wall.

by Jon Marthaler on May 27, 2008 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions
More pictorial evidence
Here’s where Young ended up picking the ball up, a good 40 feet from his slide.

Can't believe you took your camera and your laptop to the game in KC, but
apparently had Young realized he couldn’tve caught it Blackburn would have a nice big fat win right now.

now I'm having flashbacks (with a really poor memory)
of Kubel taking a terrible route to a fly ball in left during the 1st round of the 2006 playoffs against the A’s(?)

I actually thought you had tivo’d it. But now that I think about it how would you get it posted so soon.
You’ll have to excuse me, we don’t have t.v. out here in Montana. When we aren’t listening to the game at nights we are out tipping over cows.

Man, they probably should have left Nathan in
Looks like Gardy’s waving the white flag here….

Gardenhire
Ron Gardenhire is strategically retarded. Like, literally, he is mentally challenged when it comes to making stratgic decisions. Joe Nathan, after having a bloop played into a home run by his left fielder, got the last two outs of the innings, one via strikeout. He only threw ten pitches. So you’d think the best pitcher on the team would have plenty enough gas to go out and throw the tenth.
But no, here comes Dennis Reyes, the Loogy.
Sigh. Every time Gardenhire does something this stupid with his pitchers I relive my agony and fury from the 2004 ALDS.
Breathe deep and repeat after me, at least he’s not dusty, at least he’s not dusty, at least…

seriously
if there is an 11th inning, it’s a good bet the Royals send Soria back out there.

i'm having flashes to the texas game
in which Korecky got that hit. I think Gardy has gone off the deep end.

Alright Soria hits Harris
if there is any justice Gomez will hit a home run here (inside the park would be the best) Hah!

delmon young
is he out of options? I’m not sure if I have seen him hit anything except a ground ball this entire season, including the ones that made it through the infield for hits.
http://noblingblings.blogspot.com/
yeah
He’s got a 62% groundball percentage; only 22.2% FB

obviously i’m being a bit sarcastic in suggesting that we send him down, but he routinely makes more outs than he has PAs. He is just a weak ground ball machine, it reminds me of watching Nick Punto hit last year. I still believe he’ll get better, but I’m wondering how long we will have to wait.

On the heels of a big night by Cuddyer here is a great piece from ESPN:
MINNEAPOLIS—On the day he signed a three-year, $24 million contract extension back in January, Michael Cuddyer heard that Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was contemplating moving him from right field to center field to replace Torii Hunter.
Cuddyer simply let out a little chuckle and shrugged it off, saying he thought Gardenhire was joking.
Cuddyer
It was no laughing matter Monday night as the Twins opened a four-game series with Texas at the Metrodome. With Carlos Gomez still nursing a sore wrist and veteran Craig Monroe getting a day off after three straight games in center field in Colorado, Gardenhire moved Cuddyer into center field.
“Did I really think I was going to go out there? Probably not,” Cuddyer said, recalling scenario that played out in January. “But I’m not unaccustommed to switching positions by any means. It’s not like I’ve only played one position my whole life and now I’m switching. There’s no shock factor.”
With the start in center field, it means that the fifth-year veteran has played every position in the field for the Twins at least once except for pitcher and catcher.
“It completes my tour around the major league baseball diamond,” Cuddyer said, jokingly adding that he doesn’t consider pitchers baseball players and catcher doesn’t count either because “they’re idiots.”
He was then asked if he remembered the last time he played center field at any level.
“Yeah,” Cuddyer said. “Never.”

Pee Wee Baseball...
...is where we learned not to dive for balls when your team is ahead and the tying run cannot score on a hit. It is one of things that irritated me about T. Hunter. He always was thinking about making the highlight reels on ESPN even when the Twins were nursing a small lead late in the game. This is the kind of error that RG needs to take Young to task for but likely won’t. Mental errors are killers!!
"I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. See, my mule don't like people laughing. He gets the crazy idea you're laughing at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it . . ."

I seem to remember Hunter doing that too...
in the freakin’ playoffs!
I’m glad the Twins were able to pull off the win regardless. Also, I know Young doesn’t like to take days off, but I’ve heard he also doesn’t like to take hitting advice, so something needs to give. He needs to produce more than singles or outs and take abats where he looks like he is doing more than just protecting the plate. The Twins may or may not have some advice on how to do that. If they do I think he needs to listen or he needs to understand he may sit some games.
