Speed up follies
According to ESPN.com, Ron Gardenhire was fined for slow play over the weekend. Just another case of Charlie Reliford's vendetta against the Minnesota Twins.
What makes this so ridiculous is the Twins consistently lead the league in short games. Their pitchers throw more strikes than just about every team. Their hitters swing at more first pitches than just about every team. They rarely step out of the box or call time. The pitchers work fast. And the team tends to play at a fast pace overall. Prior to the weekend, Gardy had a team meeting about picking up the pace, after the team got caught up in the White Sox's lethargy.
Fining Gardy for this is like the time they fined Robert Smith for excessive celebration. For those who don't know, he typically just handed the ball to the ref after touchdowns. One time, he got a little excited and spiked the ball. He was fined. If they want to make a lesson out of a manager, why not take a guy who's team plays the longest games, like Terry Francona, who's guys step out of the box after every pitch, or Ozzie Guillen, who's guys amble around the field like they're walking in th park.

I hope I’m not the only who caught the Dave Barry reference there.

So, how do you get
the French accents to pop up? I know there’s a language key somewhere in here…
Imagine how easy it would have been to write those French papers in college if you had the automatic accent function working?

Accents
You can use the ASCII codes, that seems to work. I usually have to guess at them, don’t use them enough to track down an accurate table. Just hold done ALT and type 3 digits. The è is ALT-138. The accents and umlauts (sp?) are in that 130-140 range.

Speed up games
If they want to speed up games, then don’t allow hitters to call time-out. Assign a certain amount of time before the pitcher is allowed to pitch (to allow signals). After that time is up, give the pitchers a time limit before they have to pitch (it already exists). If they don’t make a move (pitch, or a move to first base etc.) call a ball. If hitter’s can’t call time out, they will keep paying attention, which will eliminate injury risk.
I agree with the goal. I hate watching Nomar readjust his gloves. It’s infuriating as a fan.

I agree
I also think they should limit catching visits to the mound to two an inning. The third visit counts as a coach’s visit.
I just want them to be consistent in the way they do this. If you’ve been granting timeouts all year, you don’t just refuse to at a critical juncture in a one-run game. The crew in question used its new police powers to bully the Twins. That’s just unacceptable.

Also
If you allow a quick pitch while a hitter has called time and puts his left foot out of the batter’s box, you’re going to get a 5 minute tirade from an opposing manager. Which if anything slowed the 2 hr 50 min game up
This league’s attempt at speeding up is a joke. If the league really feels the game is too slow like most people who don’t watch baseball regularly in the first place commonly complain, the real way to cut time down is between innings and pitching changes. That would mean having some innings in which pitchers warm up by the batting cages in the clubhouse or taking up Bill James’ idea of only allowing mid-inning pitching changes after and only after the pitcher has recorded an out to attempt to limit pitching changes in the first place.
But that would cut down on ad revenue which no sane business would do, so let’s pretend like we’re trying. Tell managers to jog instead of walk when making a pitching change and have unenforced time limits between pitches.
Not that the Twins were going to win that game. The way Mota was throwing he was probably going to strike Harris out anyways, but these speed up suggestions are a laughable and insulting joke.

Attendance
MLB keeps setting attendance records, despite batters unvelcroing and velcroing their batting gloves at rates that alarmist reptiles feared during the Mesozoic era.
So what’s the problem, Bud?

Buy the weigh...
...how do we all correct our misspelled headlines. This one originally read “Speed up folies” which I guess might have been correct for the French-language posters here.

When you open your own posts
You can click the edit button. After I had two comments in French, I figured I had better revert tot he English spelling. It was a little reference to French-style circuses (such as Cirque du Soleil), which is what I thought the league was turning aspects of the game into, to its own detriment. But a very little reference, ‘cause nobody got it.
