From Pat Neshek: Don't believe everything you read.

I really like Pat Neshek, as I know a lot of you do...  It's nice to see a guy take the press to task for reporting false information.  From his website:

"I just wanted to correct a report on me that aired on tonight's broadcast of the game.  One of the viewers wrote in and asked how my arm was doing.  It was reported on TV that I had successful surgery and was still aching a little?  I don't know who reports this stuff but they might want to find out the facts...I NEVER HAD SURGERY, my arm has never ached at all and I'm suprised at how painless partially tearing an elbow ligament is.  I really needed to clear this up because it annoys me when people continue to hear this junk from people who don't care to find out the facts and in return make stuff up and report it as fact.  My brace is coming off Monday and I will start my rehab then shooting for me to start tossing again around late August."

Way to take the press down a peg, Pat.  Good night and good luck.

Telly

On the night he was put on the DL, Telly reported on the air that he had a “torn muscle”. Bill Smith had to run down the corridor to the booth to correct that personally. Then about a month ago, Bert reported on the air that he had surgery. Pat published this right after that. To his credit, Bert corrected himself on the air. But the fact remains, they don’t have a fact checker.

Press vs. FSN North

I don’t pay much attention to the announcers most of the time, but if this was Blyleven or Bremer they aren’t press people, they are paid by the team, if I’m not mistaken. They are not expected to be objective. They are not a third party outsider.

What’s more, it seems to me that they would have even more information than the press.

As a former player, I would think Blyleven would have endless resources, and might even be a resource for the press.

I can understand why the thousands of words uttered during a broadcast that runs for around four hours counting pregame and post game would not be able to have someone check facts for every single impromptu remark needed to fill the air, but how could team insiders miss this?

Bert's kind of a loose cannon

I’m sure it was somewhere in his notes. But I am amazed at how many little things these guys get wrong. On the one hand, they have a casual attitude, which is comfortable to listen to. But they’ve slipped in accuracy enough for it to be noticeable. Not to Gordo’s level or anything. But not the Ford Frick nominee level that some ascribe to Bert.

Bert was funny last night

On the air, during a discussion about San Diego’s sidearm reliever, he was adamant to point out that Pat Neshek “did NOT have surgery!” Dick chuckled, and it was nice to see them not only admit their mistake but give themselves a little ribbing.

He'll beat that one to death

Just like he does every time a foul ball goes into the stands two rows up, “That would be an out in Oakland because of all the foul territory!” Or, every time it’s someone’s birthday, he’ll say “It’s XX days until my birthday.” Or, every time a pitcher gets taken out early, he’ll say, “He was taken out because of the pitch count.” I expect every time a Neshek reference comes up, he’ll say, “Pat Neshek, who did NOT have surgery, is warming up.” It was funny last night. I predict tedious banter in the future.

Incidentally, he was so keyed about the pitch count that he failed to realize that Perkins was in the on-deck circle in the bottom of the fifth until both Harris and Buscher reached. So Gardy pulled him back to allow Lamb to hit a slow roller to the first baseman. In other words, Gardy would have sent Perkins and his 78 pitches out to pitch the top of the sixth if the Twins didn’t have a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fifth. My point? Bert’s tedious banter sometimes gets in the way of his analysis.

I guess I haven't watched enough FSN North broadcasts ...

I like Dick & Bert.

First off, they seem to be having fun while they’re doing the game – that comes across (at least, to me) and it makes the broadcast enjoyable.

Do they get everything right? Nope; neither do I – neither does everyone here.

I’d much rather have Bert correct himself 5 times a week about Pat Neshek than have one of these broadcasters who gets something wrong & then pretends he never said it.

BTW – I’ve been watching the Twins on FSN here in Florida since at least 2004.
