Open Thread: Tigers @ Twins Recap
This is something we'll start doing a little more often since usually, by the time these nightcaps wrap up...I'm due to get up in a couple of hours! Be sure to drop by the Open Thread Recaps after the game to post your thoughts and impressions on what happened.
What was the pivotal point?
Who made the big hit?
Who missed the cutoff man?
You get the idea. See you tomorrow, Twins fans!

Big Hit
Who made the big hit? – Craig Monroe’s 3 run shot. Craig’s shot put the Twins up 3-1 after hitting into 3 DP in the three previous innings. I believe that if Monroe had not hit that, the Twins would have fallen tonight. That shot rattled the cage of Robertson.
Biggest Mistake? Punto attempting to score. In the bottom of the 8th, Alexi Casilla hit a scorcher down the line that kicked off of Guillen’s glove. Casilla was credited with a basehit; however, dumb Punto tried to score even though the ball did not go very far away from Guillen. I am not sure by how many feet Punto was thrown out by, but it seemed dead certain that he would be thrown out by the comment by John Gordon. Plus, Reddog was due up and he already had 2 hits on the night and a big 2 run single.
Who Missed the cutoff man? Delmon Young – almost allowed Thames to advance a base but Thames held up. Not too big a deal but he did miss the cutoff man.
Biggest Disappointment? The fact that the White Sox won in the bottom of the tenth despite being down by a run going into the bottom of the tenth. Alexei Ramirez hit a homer to tie it and then Cabrera hit a 2 out single to plate Wick (or whatever his name is) who had a single and stole second. White Sox run away with the victory 3-2 and the Twins remain 2.5 back!

I still say...
Punto was safe. Pudge didn’t block the entire plate and Punto got his foot on it before he was tagged. But the umpire was standing BEHIND Pudge so therew as no way he could possibly have seen that.

Also...
Nice to see Monroe get a hite off a lefty.
Nice to see Bass pitch well from the bullpen after last night’s meltdown.
Nice to see that we were able to pick up the win despite the fact that the reserves were all starting.

that should say hit for one, and more importantly, it was a BIG hit, but actually, it’s nice to see him get some hits in general vs. a lefty.
I stink at typing apparently…

Punto never made it home
Pudge lifted hi in the air and threw him down like a rag doll. That was funny.
Punto: DP KK infield hit. 1-4. Woohoo!

From what I saw...
Punto slid into the plate and then popped up on his own free will. Pudge was down trying to block the plate, how could he lift him up and “throw him” ?

Pudge was sitting on top of home plate with the ball
Punto was out by five feet. He tried to slide into Pudge, and Pudge tagged his foot before it even got to home plate, then he stood up picking up Punto by the legs and dropped him on the ground. They showed the replay a bunch of times. The play wasn’t even close. Ulger sent him, so it was his fault as usual. But Punto had no chance on that play.

Any collision at the plate...
...the runner will be called out if the ball arrives before the runner; I’d say at least 90% of the time, tag or no tag (unless it is blatant that there could not have been any possible way to put a tag on the runner). It’s not written donw anywhere, but I thnk there is a general agreement that this is the case. The one HUGE exception was when the Twins lost to the Braves in the WS (game 4?) and there was a collision at home on a tag-up. Harper held the ball but the runner was called safe. I hated that call!

Vulcan Mind Meld
Halfway through your post, I was thinking, “But what about Harper’s tag against the Braves?!” The explanation was that Harper didn’t tag the runner with his glove, instead just brushing him with his elbow – there wasn’t really a collision.
The other collision I remember in that series was Gladden taking out Greg Olson – Olson ended up doing a headstand that made the cover of Sports Illustrated, and Gladden was out.
