Good lineup today.

I like that Gardy isn’t pulling up short just because the ‘break is tomorrow. Full speed ahead, hawking for the win. I like it.

Mike Lamb is starting, which make me curious more than anything else. I’m wondering if this is it for him…

by Jesse on Jul 13, 2008 12:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Lamb Starting

I really think this is being done to Shop him in some sort of way, i really think you could Package Lamb and a prospect or two to get an Adrian Beltre or a solid 3rd baseman in here.

by Tony_O on Jul 13, 2008 1:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Those would

have to be two incredibly prospects. Especially if the Twins would want Seattle to eat some of the contract.

by Jesse on Jul 13, 2008 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well We could

Package Brian Dinkelman secondbaseman from New Britian as part of that deal….seeing is that we are set for the future with Alexi Casilla at the Major League Level and Sergio Santos/Trevore Plouffe/ and Alejandro Machado stored away at rochester.

by Tony_O on Jul 13, 2008 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I tend to be pessimistic when

talking about deals for established MLB players, meaning I expect more in a return than might be realistic. If you saw the series I did when discussing what I’d want from the Mets/Yankees/Red Sox/Dodgers in return for Santana, I was looking for a whole lot more than what we got. I just imagine other teams would be wanting the same for their established players.

So you might be right, and Dinkelman might be tantalizing to them. But to me, how he’s doing at AA isn’t inspiring:

Ft. Myers: 313/399/414
New Britain: 211/274/250

Dinkelman is 24, has a good walk rate, a career minor league OBP of 364 which isn’t bad for a middle infielder, but none of it makes him a top prospect…which is really what the Mariners would need as a centerpiece of any trade. I really think the Twins would need to pick someone much more highly touted than Brian.

by Jesse on Jul 13, 2008 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Reason Lamb is in the Lineup according to Lavelle E Neal III.

Mike Lamb is in the lineup as the desginated hitter. He’s 5 for his last 7 against Justin Verlander.

by Tony_O on Jul 13, 2008 1:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Is that THE reason?

Why can’t anyone in the entire Twins organization explain something about sample size to Gardenhire?

by PhoenixV on Jul 13, 2008 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Probably not

http://ww3.startribune.com/blogs/neal/2008/07/13/twins-tigers-a-brush-up-on-geese-relations/

Gardy has previously made some horrible lineup decision based on small sample size flukes, but nothing in the LEN3 article suggests that this is the case this time.

by PhoenixV on Jul 13, 2008 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not TOO upset about this one today.

The Twins have some big decisions coming up. Liriano, Cuddyer, Tolbert…they’re all getting ready to get back to the big team. I’m feeling positive today, so I have faith that the Twins will do the right thing and swallow up some cash for the sake of a better team. This should include a DFA of Mike Lamb.

by Jesse on Jul 13, 2008 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Tiger radio announcers

are saying that the Twins have discussed using a 6-man rotation, so that they could bring Liriano up.

Can anyone confirm this? It seems like a waste.

by Jesse on Jul 13, 2008 1:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes They are talking about that...

Paul Molitor was on KFAN’s Show with Dan Berrerio on friday and had mentioned that their is some internal discussion about this, that they are waiting to see how Liriano does in his next start to seriously talk about this idea….

I dont see this Happening, if they do call up Liriano, Look for Boof, Breslow or Bass or Lamb to be Traded or released. to be DFA’d, Perkins or Slowey moved to Long Relief Role, and Liriano take that starting positionPosition.

by Tony_O on Jul 13, 2008 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hope Perk and Slowey

stay in the rotation, they’re doing fine. If anyone gets removed, it really needs to be Hernandez.

Here’s an idea: Bring up Liriano, move Hernandez into the pen as the long reliever. They’d have to do something with Bass or Bonser, but they’d also be able to hang onto Hernadez (for whatever reason but it’s clear they want to), but that also puts your five best starters into the rotation while maintaining someone who could come in multiple times a week to cushion the bullpen.

by Jesse on Jul 13, 2008 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dont think

Livan can be Moved to Long Relief easily, Livan has been a starter his entire career, Eats Innings, i think Gardy would keep him in the rotation.

by Tony_O on Jul 13, 2008 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That

whole idea disturbs me. I think you’re right, and that’s exactly why it disturbs me.

by Jesse on Jul 13, 2008 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lol....

I really Think when you look at it in the End, the Twins Made a Mistake going out and getting Hernandez, which is hard to say because theirs nobody else other than Liriano who could make an impact on that rotation right away, you look at it, Boof Sucks, Kevin Mulvey, Brian Duensing and Phillip Humber arent Major league Ready, Danny Graves might have been that 5th pitcher, its a very touchy subject when you figure out the rotation.

Gladden and Gordon

are insisting Morneau kept his foot on the bag. Is anyone watching this?

by Jesse on Jul 13, 2008 1:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

2-0, Tigers.

Clete Thomas with a two-run blast.

by Jesse on Jul 13, 2008 1:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I am not

so pissed about the first base umpire blowing that call (although he should have gotten it right) but for all the other umpires to not “see” anything is absolutely unexceptable.

Here we go

2nd time through the lineup let’s give’em hell now.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

I'll take that!

WP by Verlander, Mauer scores, Morneau to third!

2-1, Tigers.

NICE AT BAT

That was a great at bat, way to get us a little closer to the Tiger bullpen Kubes

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

Great AB by Kubs

that was one helluva AB. he fought off the fastballs that he didnt like and ended up drawing a walk on a curve.

ADDA BOY

HARRIS!!!!!!!!

by Tony_O on Jul 13, 2008 2:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Harris

Beautiful at bat again. Damn near every Twins batter has been down 0-2 this inning and fought back. So sayeth Dick and Bert.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

Wow..

...Harris comes up big AGAIN. I’ve been much impressed with him at the plate these last two days.

by Jesse on Jul 13, 2008 2:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Harris

who can stop this little man? 5-6 since yesterday with 5 RBI! Stay hot Harris!!!

by 33MorneauMVP on Jul 13, 2008 2:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

oh

and Morneau once again claims the batting title for the Twins. Morneau at .324 Mauer is way back there at .323

It would really be interesting what would happen if on the last day the finished in a dead tie for the batting crown…that would really be interesting!!!!

you probably are all far more savvy than I,

but for you troglodytes here is how I have to do it:

find a picture,
right click on it,
clicl on “properties”
cut the entire “URL”
go back to this website and click the little tree icon, backspace the http: prompt and;
then click paste.

Yes, you computer guys can laugh at me for the long explanation, but I am just trying to help those who are as Ludditic as I am.

What's Verlanders pitch count?

He damn near doubled it that inning I bet. A long one like that especially takes it out of a guy rather than a bunch of slightly large innings. He looked filthy the first time through and I was worried we were going to see an amazing performance for the wrong guy today. Let’s keep it going next inning.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

by halfchest on Jul 13, 2008 2:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Clete Thomas with a good game.

2-run bomb and a 1-out double here in the bottom of the 4th.

apparently

not on the bases though….he needs to hit more homers because he cant run the bases very well.

CF circus

Carlos Gomez, it has been mathematically proved: The shortest route between two points on a plane surface is the straight line segment between those points. Please, use this knowledge in the field.

In his defense

I heard the announcers say how windy it is and the ball is taking some crazy curves once it’s in the air

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

by halfchest on Jul 13, 2008 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it is

very windy there….look at the flags. I have seen Kubel take some “bad routes” but it is only because the wind is creating havoc.

by 33MorneauMVP on Jul 13, 2008 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

I know I’m being too harsh on Gomez. He actually has some pretty amazing fielding stats.

I thought that maybe we were gonna be able to put some more good at bats together but man he just destroyed us two innings in a row. Looks like we’ll be seeing him in the 7th if not longer.

Are we happy with Morneau being in the HRD?

I don’t believe all the stuff about it throwing off power numbers..

by CARXRiedmann on Jul 13, 2008 3:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Plus

The AL is going to get their asses kicked in the derby. I’d take Uggla, Braun, Berkman, and Utley over Hamilton, Morneau, Sizemore, and Longoria.

by CARXRiedmann on Jul 13, 2008 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Theory

Maybe Gomez just loves to field so much that he wants to end the Twins’ offensive half-innings as quickly as possible.

by PhoenixV on Jul 13, 2008 3:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Positive note

It’s nice that Jim Leyland via the IBB is giving back all the runs that Gomez has cost the Twins in the series.

by PhoenixV on Jul 13, 2008 3:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Explanation

The intentional base on balls almost always hurts the defending team (in terms of expected runs and adjusted for hitter quality). I haven’t seen Leyland use the strategy correctly once in this series, and he has used it A LOT.

Kubel

Can’t blame him for hacking at that pitch, just got a little bit too underneath it. It’s nice that Todd Jones is the most overrated closer in baseball

is the most overrated closer but we also have our “bad” section of the lineup due up….

We do have Young on the bench if need be. AND PUNTO !!!!!!

I'm not even mad at Bass

I’m mad at Gardy deciding it’s a good idea to use him in a one run game when we’ve got a four day break coming up and the bullpen should get used

Still

taking 3 out of 4 in Detroit is pretty damn good. We’ve smothered them in the season series and only have 3 games left and they’re all at the dome. We lost a couple close ones in Boston overall you can’t be too upset with a 3-4 road trip against the teams we were up against.
