Liriano time?

Kelsie Smith is reporting in the Pioneer Press that the Twins are very close to making room for Francisco Liriano. The story is a bit confusing because Smith jumps around with the shifting sands of opinion from the Twins front office. But it is clear that Assistant GM Rob Antony's most recent statement suggests that they will find a way to make room on the roster for Liriano. They have not ruled out putting him in the bullpen or even a six-man rotation, but it does not appear that any of the current starters is going anywhere for the time being, again, according to Antony.

To me the story just doesn't add up. It's as though Antony talked to Kelsie Smith and then tried to recant part of his claim that a call-up was immanent. My hunch is something is brewing involving one of the starting pitchers and that will be resolved before July 31. That is how they will make room for Liriano. They just don't have all the facts yet because the deal is not done, so Antony is only telling part of the story.

I think

I think that Smith was facing a deadline and was trying desperately to fill up space.

It’s obvious that Liriano is going to be called up soon, and it’s also not hard to deduce that Liriano will go to either the bullpen, a six-man rotation, or bump someone out of the rotation.

Thanks for that wonder piece, Kelsie Smith.

In the original story

She only quoted Antony saying that they would find room for him very soon. The story that now appears quotes Bill Smith, who basically said that they will not call him up anytime soon. Sounds like Antony spoke without permission. But it still makes me think something is brewing. Smith wants to play it close to the vest until the trade is done. But Antony’s admission indicates that at least they’re trying to make room for him.

My favorite part of the article is

“Liriano, demonstrating that he is fully recovered from elbow-ligament transplant surgery, is 7-0 with a 2.73 ERA in his last nine starts at Rochester, averaging 9.6 strikeouts and 1.8 walks per nine innings. His fastball is consistently in the mid-90s and touching 97 mph, scouts say.”

Agent: Twins phenom Liriano frustrated over status

Montanatwinsfan to agent and phenom: shut the “f@*K! up.

As linked above by TMW, Ken Rosenthal reports that Liriano is frustrated by his perception that Liriano is still in the minors, as some kind of plan to keep him under contract control.

The last time he expressed his frustration, the Twins brought him up and gave him a chance to prove he wasn’t ready; and prove it he did. Now, Liriano should just shut the hell up and play.

Let's just get the deal done and everyone can be happy.

Blackburn for Beltre and $10 million off his contract.

Blackburn

Why would the M’s make that deal?

Re:

Because Nick Blackburn is having Carlos Silva’s 05 season right now, and look at how much money they committed because of that season. Psssssh! Duh.

this what pisses me off about the twins organization!

they always take way to long to promote a player and they said when they sent liriano down that he would be back in a couple of months if everything went right down there and guess what he is pitching like the liriano of 06 down there and im not going to believe that the twins can make the playoffs if fat ass livan continues to be part of this team, but when they call up franchise then i will believe that they can make a run for the division with him because he is my favorite twins pitcher and he sure and hell doesnt deserve to be in the minors when the twins continue to leave boof, bass and lamb on the roster!

dump boof, bass, lamb and trade livan and promote mulvey, macri, liriano and trade for a 3rd basemen

problems solved with those roster moves as boof, livan, lamb, and bass contiue to get let up in games against good lineups and continue to just rid the pin of the bench

He’s our best pitcher right now and all he’s doing is helping the Red Wings beat the Iron Pigs in the standings. Get him up here!

8th inning

Drop Bass, and bring up Liriano to pitch the 8th?

by wcooley on Jul 17, 2008 10:26 PM EDT   0 recs

Not sure it's fair

to move Liriano to the Pen. The Twins, if they do anything, always set their pitchers up to be successful by asking them to do only what they know they can do.

Liriano has never been a reliever. They are worried about how relieving may affect his arm. Is it fair to have a starting pitcher suddenly have to warm up and go into a game on short notice? Would he throw strikes? Would his confidence be shattered by a bad outing or two?

All that said, there is something intriguing about bringing in a set-up guy who throws hard strikes and has that intimidation factor. If I am the Red Sox, I would much rather face Brian Bass in the 8th than a left-handed flame-throwing stud.

And, given how many innings Liriano has already pitched this year, long term it’s not a bad strategy to limit the wear and tear on his prodigious left arm. He would pitch far fewer innings in relief.

Overall, the chance of Liriano landing in the pen IMHO? Less than 5%.

Not entirely true
Liriano has never been a reliever.

Yes he has, during the first month and a half of 2006. Not a lot of time, and as far as I know he’s always been a starter in the minors, but he does have some experience as a reliever.

This really isn't about a bunch of speculation over stupid quotes

Toss away the b.s. What’s the reality?

Given his progress since the surgery, we pretty much know he’s going to be a force of nature next season, and that he’s ready to contribute at the big-league level now. So, he’ll be up.
