What Moves Should Be Made?

With the Trade Deadline approaching quickly....what moves, if any, should the Twins make.  If any moves are made, one, or maybe all of these, are the only moves I see being made.

Livan Hernandez: I see the Twins trading away the veteran right hander and relying more upon the young guns like they did in 2006.  If the Twins do trade Livan, I see them calling up Francisco Liriano.

Who would the Twins get for Livan?:  I see only a 2 AA or AAA players coming to the Twins for Livan.  Why?  Livan does not have a high ceiling and can only be relied upon to provide Vet presence and eat innings.  Aside from that, Livan cant do anything except give up an amazing number of base hits per 9 innings pitched.  This is why I think that if the Twins do trade Livan, they will call up Liriano since they wont get much in return.  But, hey, we got Matt Macri for Ramon Ortiz, so who knows?

Boof Bonser:  Boof needs a change of scenery just like many of the other pitchers before him did: Kyle Loshe, R.C. Romero, Juan Rincon, and even Sir Sydney Ponson.  If they do trade Boof, they would most likely call up a reliever from AAA to take his spot: either Bobby Korecky or Mariano Gomez.

Who would the Twins get in return for Boof?:  Unfortunately, not much.  At least in terms of short term solutions.  Bonser's trade ceiling isnt very high since he does have an ERA over 6 in almost 80 innings of pitching.  However, several teams could want the Boofster.  Yankees and Boston are looking for a good solid reliever that can throw 1-3 innings of good ball.  Marlins, Nationals, Padres, Rockies could all want him.  So, although we might not get much in return, there are teams out there that could be willing to part with a decent prospect for some nice bullpen help or even spot starter in the Rotation.

Mike Lamb:  This actually seems like the most probable move right now.  Lamb has gone really nowhere in his Twins debut and now is getting his hacks off of the bench as it now looks like he has officially lost his spot in the everyday lineup with Buscher filling in very nicely.

Who would the Twinkies get in return?:  Not much...Lamb has never been a starting 3B and has been used most of his career as a platoon man like he is being used as now although he has not started in a game since June 13.  The Twins could probably push him off onto some NL team like the Brewers or the Nationals.  They wont get much in return though.

Finally, I can see the Twins making one more move:

Dennys Reyes:  Why? With Mariano Gomez chomping at the bit down in AAA, I can see Billy Smith moving Reyes.  Reyes has performed very admirably here in 2008 and we might get a decent prospect for him.

Who would the Twins get?:  If there is a team out there that needs a LH specialist, I can see the Twins pulling off a very nice deal.  I cant think of any teams right off the top of my head but I am sure that between the AL and NL, there are at least a few teams that would like a LH specialist with a good ERA and good numbers vs. LH as well as some pretty decent numbers vs RH.

Others to watch for?:  Nick Punto - Matt Tolbert is a basic copy of Punto and a lot younger.  Tolbert's glove isnt quite as good but he is a younger player.  Craig Monroe - this move would free Kubel and even allow Randy Ruiz to get a call up and I am sure he hits much better vs. LH than Craigsy does right now.  Adam Everett - he has caused nothing but heartaches and he has contributed to a number of losses for the Twins and he still has yet to play since he went down with his apparent season ending shoulder injury.  And finally, although this might be a little stretch: Jason Pridie - has done nothing at AAA and I cant believe some Twins fans wanted him to be our starting CF at the beginning of the season or our 4th outfielder.  I see him as expendable.

That concludes my predictions of the moves that the Twins will make, if they make any.  Right now, if they continue to play this well, I don't see anything happening.  Team Chemistry is good, pitching is amazing, offense is go for launch, defense is better, and bullpen has been phenomenal.

As much as everyone wants it..

I don’t see Livan leaving this season, as long as the team continues to exceed expectations, he’ll probably be around for the “veteran presence”

I think Livan stays

There’s no trade value for him and if he’s consistently going up against a #4 or 5 starter, the Twins still have a chance to win while he eats those innings.

don't trade Boof

not yet anyways. You’re supposed to sell high, not low. Also, “needing a change of scenery” isn’t the same as “sucking”, and just about every guy you described as needing a change of scenery just plain sucks. the only one who doesn’t is Kyle Lohse, who only sucks sometimes.
