Game 101: Twins @ Yankees
Minnesota Twins at New York Yankees, Jul 23, 2008 1:05 PM EDT
Thanks to Tony_O for posting the game thread last night!
I'm out in Stowmarket dealing with family matters, so I won't be around for today's game thread either. It's all you guys today!
Thanks,
Jesse

Good sign
Well, it looks like Gomez and Span will be keeping with the same lineup positions as yesterday.
La Velle reports that the clubhouse is very relaxed today. The Twins are getting scared by Yankee Stadium, and whenever they can relax, it’s a good thing. Here’s what La Velle says about the clubhouse:
But the clubhouse seems normal this morning. Some players are watching TV. There’s a card game going on. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire is doing a crossword puzzle and Denard Span is looking at video of how good a hitter he is. Normal stuff.

Mussina
Personally I have no idea how he’s been this good so far this season. I hope the Twins pound him today and expose him as the old man he really is.
Gardenhire's major league career: Banjo hitting, futility infielder who couldn't lick it.
Rick Anderson's major league career: Strikethrower who never made it happen with his sub 90's fastball.
Really gives a new definition to living vicariously through other people, don't it?

Anyone had a chance to watch games live?
I’m wondering how the strike zone has been over the series. It’s right around this time that the zone gets a lot bigger for Yankee pitchers and a lot smaller for Yankee hitters. God forbid we have a post season without the Yankees and Red Sox.

the more Gomez breaks bats over his leg
the more I worry about him hurting himself over his frustration.
If there isn’t a let down from Span batting first, I think a case needs to be made to send Gomez down to Rochester.
He is not ready, he has the talent in his body but not skill in his head

I pretty much agree at this point
While his defense is far superior than anyone else we have, I’m starting to worry that he’s not in an environment where he is driven/able to improve. He still needs to learn how to bunt, learn how to work counts, learn how to use his power, learn how to steal. That’s a lot of things to work on while on the job. I would think it would be a lot easier in Rochester.

When you make that play...
You look great.
When you don’t, you look kind of foolish.

Offensive inneptitude
I’m sorry but you’ve got to go into a series against the Yankees, especially in NY, and be ready to out-slug them. Yes good pitching beats good hitting. But this is the Yankees man, they’re stacked. And the fact that thus far we’ve scored 3 runs versus the crap starters they’ve thrown out there is absolutely unacceptable. Ponson’s a joke, Rasner is a borderline 5th starter and Mussina is over the hill.

I'd say they are not as staked as they used to be
no Matsui
no Posada
two holes in the lineup we haven’t been able to take advantage of. first 2 runs today, knocked in by some random #9 hitter

I know
You can’t expect to go there an play “Twins baseball” though. That being scrap together 3-4 runs, get a solid pitching performance and have your bullpen hold them down. You gotta be ready to put some 10 spots up on that board and put there crumbling organization in its place.

SO of Kubel on 4 pitches

Pitch looked low on Gameday
Kubel sometimes has a tough time pinch hitting because he takes a lot of borderline pitches and it’s hard to know the strikezone coming off the bench.
