Something that would never happen

But I'd consider it--and I wonder if anyone else would.  Would you trade for Manny Ramirez?  I think I might, actually--what say you?

Star-divide

I would install him as the full-time DH, DFA Monroe, and create a sort of platoon between Kubel and Gomez, with Span shifting between center and right depending on which of the other two are playing.  Of course, if Cuddyer comes back, it creates a playing time problem, but I'd worry about that when the time comes.

Actually, if Cuddyer is anywhere close to returning, it isn't out of the realm that the Sox would take him back for Ramirez--I'd actually do that, I think.  I don't know what the Sox would be looking for, but it couldn't be much in terms of inexpensive prospects given Manny's salary and issues.

He's owed something around 7M for the rest of this year, and then there are two team option years at 20M.  As much as the Twins cry poverty, they could pick it up for next year as well.  Manny can freaking hit, and as a DH, it keeps his knees healthier, and you don't have the defensive mishaps.

I know this is completely outside the Twins box, and I'm not sure I would do it--but something fun to talk about while the trade deadline approaches without activity.

Too much of a headache for my liking, even with the production. Who’s to say he would want to play here anyways? He can veto any trades.

Are you saying Iraq is a better place to play than Minnesota?

Because he said he was willing to play in Iraq. I’d bet he’d be willing to play in Minnesota so long as we’re contending. And, assuming we wouldn’t have to give up too much, I’d definitely do this. Manny is the best right handed hitter since who knows when-he’d solve almost everyone of the Twins offensive issues. And I don’t think the chemistry stuff would be that big a deal if he was willing to come here-he’d probably want to stick it to the Sox and keep the Manny Being Manny stuff to a minimum, at least until next year.

What we'd give up is the real question?

It seems like we have too much of a logjam anyhow and I think the Sox are going to want way too much. So even if the Twins were willing to consider salary/headache I wouldn’t want them to give up the players needed.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

Another question

Would you sell your soul to Satan for a night with Scarlett Johannson? Sure, it would never happen, but would you? Something to think about while we are being hypothetical.

by wcooley on Jul 28, 2008 12:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No, I don't think so

One night just isn’t enough. Frankly, I’m too risk averse to sell my soul for anything.

by Eric in Madison on Jul 28, 2008 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not trading me

but I would give up the souls of a couple of prospects for a night with Scarlett.

Maybe

A couple prospects and an option on your soul for future considerations, depending on how the night goes.

We Would Have to Give up

Quite a Big Amount of Prospects, Lets Go with Span, Ben Revere and Probably Shooter Hunt to get Manny.

by Tony_O on Jul 28, 2008 1:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I doubt it

Obviously there’s a limit on what I’d give up to get him.

by Eric in Madison on Jul 28, 2008 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't do that, but

I’m not sure we’d have to give up much. Who is rumored to want to give up a lot for him. There would be no draft compensation if he leaves, and they are considering not picking up his option at the end of the year. They may just want to get rid of a headache, and even save $7 m while they’re at it. All of this is claerly hypothetical, since it won’t happen, but if it was Cuddyer and Duensing, would you do it?

This is a really cool idea. I’m totally on board. This is up there with signing Bonds (which I am also for, since he mashes lefties, and happens to mash righties as well). Manny would give us exactly what we don’t have, and my only real complaint with him AS A BASEBALL PLAYER is his lackadaisical attitude toward fielding. That wouldn’t be a concern on our squad, with him at DH.

Draft Compensation

Could the team decline the team option but then offer arbitration? If so, then couldn’t there be draft comp?

Also, there is a 0.0% chance that the Twins trade for him, and probably a 0.2% chance that the Red Sox trade him. Why would they actually get rid of their best hitter when they are contending for the WS, no matter how much of a headcase he may be at times.

I would not mind Manny...

Simply basing my answer on his attitude and the show he puts on every time he steps on the field, I wouldn’t mind Manny.

Here’s an article I wrote a few days ago on this very subject, if anyone’s interested:

wouldn't do it

can you imagine how many balls he would just lose in the dome? the guy’s defense is so bad, some people who have studied the issue actually suggest he costs the red sox nearly as many runs as he creates with his bat. i’m guessing their own studies have more or less confirmed this, and that’s why they don’t want him around anymore, and haven’t for quite some time.

Not that this would ever happen, but his defense really has nothing to do with it. He would never be in the outfield if he played with the twins. He would DH every day.

DH

Why in the world would the Twins need let him play the field? They’d still have Kubel, Young, Span, and Gomez to patrol the outfield. He could DH until the Series, if it came to that, and I’m sure at that point I’d be happy to see him in left field.

Two Scenarios

I agree this will never happen, but…

If the Red Sox pay his salary for the rest of this season (and he’d walk after the year), I’d give them Kubel, Swarzak, Duensing, Lis and Bonser. It’s not much considering I’d just be DH’ing Manny and they’re footing the bill, but I don’t think two months of Manny is worth much more than that.

If the Twins were to pay his salary the rest of the year (and he’d still walk), I’d give them Span and a couple of mid-level pitching prospects…or maybe even just one. If we’re paying him $5MM for two months work and taking on a personal problem from Boston, I’m not giving them much back in return.

Hell Yeah

Hell Yeah I’d take Manny. I really don’t like him, his such a baby whiner. But so what? He hits like a nut.

It totally wont happen and this isn’t even the best year for it (man, Manny DH’ing in 2006 anyone?) but it would make this team just so much better.

One big problem

Manny has elected to go “on holiday” the last two Septembers. Will he guarantee the Twins that he will postpone his vacation until after the season?
