Game 108: White Sox @ Twins
Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins, Jul 31, 2008 8:10 PM EDT
Pregame
From the Sox Series Preview:
John Danks: Just 23 in April, Danks is enjoying a very successful sophomore campaign with the South Siders. It's easy to see why: better strikeout rates, better walk rates, home run rates cut in half, more gound balls, static line drive ratios and he's leaving more men on base. Deciphering that formula is easy: Danks is much better than he was in 2007. He throws a good cut fastball now, in addition to the fastball/curveball/changeup/slider repetoire. Also, he's been better on the road, and he handles right-handed hitters extremely well. If there's one chink in his armor right now, it's that he's come undone a bit in his last three starts, totaling 17.2 innings with 15 runs and 24 hits. He's still getting strikeouts and limiting walks, however, so it might be that he's just leaving the ball over the plate a bit too often. That, or he's been unlucky. Let's hope for the former.
Taking the hill for the second place Twins will be 26-year old Scott Baker. His last outing was his worst since returning from the disabled list in early June, and having said that, it wasn't that bad, relatively speaking. Five-plus innings, five hits, three runs; I'd take that from Livan Hernandez ten out of ten times. Baker's keys for success tonight: get ahead in the count early and often, attack the hitters no matter what the count, and have confidence in all pitches.
Tonight's lineup features Adam Everett, who will see his first major league plate appearance since May 21st. Otherwise it's the typical lineup we see versus left-handed pitchers, with the exception of Jason Kubel getting a start at desginated hitter. Game time is in thirty minutes!

its
time to strike. We have had some relatively good success vs Danks so lets keep it up and if Baker can hold off the ChiSox bats we are in good shape….

Unrelated note
Count me in the group who thought Hunter would coast through this season after signing the big contract. Hunter is now hitting .282/.345/.493 and just launched a big 3-run homerun versus Petitte and the Yankees. For comparison, in his career year last year he hit .287/.334/.505. Count me in the group who would not want to have my team facing the Angels come September after the Texiera trade.

Great start Baker…lets back him up bats!

That's a good question
... which we obviously will never know the answer to. One thing is clear, though: Vavra either can’t or won’t control Gomez. And it’s a darned shame.
what do you
mean he hasnt developed as a player this year? He has learned to deal with many different things…success, failure, moving down the batting order. That is a big thing to learn. I doubt we would have done as well as we have if we didnt have Gomez…maybe not by much but still…
I don't know...
He might have gained a bit in the mental department, but it can’t be much ‘cause he’s still struggling and looking as lost as ever at the plate. His overall offensive production is almost similar to last year, trading a decreased walk rate for a little extra power.
There weren’t a lot of other good-looking options at CF at the start of the season, so I’m not second-guessing the Twins here. But Gomez should’ve been demoted by now. Get him out of our sight, so we aren’t constantly reminded that we could have seen Johan in a Twins jersey for another year…
true
I think Gomez could be a better player if he were just sent down for a few weeks and learned a little discipline at the plate. hopefully over the winter, Gomez will go to winter ball or some such thing and work on all this.
Stats
I just looked up Gomez’ numbers on The Hardball Times. In fact, he’s been considerably lucky this year, in terms of batting average on balls in play (BABIP). It currently sits at .328, which is more than 40 points above what would be expected based on his line drive percentage (16%).
If one adjusted Gomez’ numbers to account for his luck, my guess is that his offensive production would be almost exactly equal to last year.
Man
Baker’s really battling tonight, 3 innings and 61 pitches

Because Gardy is a drama queen
I cannot – and I repeat – I simply cannot see why it would help a team to have its manager behave like a kindergarten kid. Baseball players are so much more disciplined than soccer players, so I fail to see why that shouldn’t apply to the managers as well.
And now...

Livan Gone?
By La Velle
There are strong indications that the Twins will cut loose righthander Livan Hernandez in order to make room for lefthander Francisco Liriano.
Several people with knowledge of the situation have said over the past two days that it’s time for Liriano to join the major league roster and, while he has won 10 games, Hernandez’s recent results indicate that it is time for a change.
Liriano is scheduled to start on Friday for the Red Wings but it looks like that won’t happen. It’s unclear where he would be inserted into the Twins rotation.
Indications are that the Twins are willing to eat the remainder of Hernandez’s $5 million salary.

Player of the Game?
Jason Kubel…no doubt about it!!!!
Nice Win!
Baker gives up four, but the Twins rally and take it going away. This team is somehow better than the sum of its parts.

Great game
The Twins showed a lot of heart coming back from that deficit. Nice to meet all of you and hope the Twins keep it going. I’m out after listening to Hawk Harrelson for couple of hours I need to go to bed. That is one awful annoucing crew. Let’s get the Tribe.

has no business writing columns or giving his opinion on tv, get a different job you non-whimsical idiot!
Gardenhire's major league career: Banjo hitting, futility infielder who couldn't lick it.
