Livan gone?
as was mentioned in the Game Thread, Livan might be out the door, as per LaVelle
There are strong indications that the Twins will cut loose righthander Livan Hernandez in order to make room for lefthander Francisco Liriano.
Several people with knowledge of the situation have said over the past two days that it’s time for Liriano to join the major league roster and, while he has won 10 games, Hernandez’s recent results indicate that it is time for a change.
Liriano is scheduled to start on Friday for the Red Wings but it looks like that won’t happen. It’s unclear where he would be inserted into the Twins rotation.
Indications are that the Twins are willing to eat the remainder of Hernandez’s $5 million salary.

I would advocate this
But I’d be surprised given how risk averse the Twins are. That would give them a rotation that would include nobody over the age of 26.
It shapes up very well going forward. Next year’s rotation will be incredibly cheap—perhaps allowing them to solve some other problems. Like finding a thirdbaseman, which, post-Koskie, has become something akin to Spinal Tap’s drummer.

This is going to be intersting. I think we’ll find out what happens sometime tomorrow. I’d rather see Livan go to the ‘pen with Boof to the street, but at least Liriano will be up in the bigs.

It is
It is absolutely unbe-freakin-leaveable to me why they signed him in the first place, so yeah, I’d say I’m happy. i guess you could say we didn’t know that all our young guys would succeed like this, but really, is Livan’s bad ERA in any way surprising to anyone? it shouldn’t be.

If it smells fishy, it probably is.
Hmm, he comes up August 1st, which is the cutoff for years of service, if I remember correctly, and they’re going to say it’s not about money?
Seems like Liriano’s agent just might’ve been onto something there.
Q: When does a player become eligible for salary arbitration?
A: A player with three or more years of service, but less than six years, may file for salary arbitration. In addition, a player can be classified as a “Super Two” and be eligible for arbitration with less than three years of service. A player with at least two but less than three years of Major League service shall be eligible for salary arbitration if he has accumulated at least 86 days of service during the immediately preceding season and he ranks in the top 17 percent in total service in the class of Players who have at least two but less than three years of Major League service, however accumulated, but with at least 86 days of service accumulated during the immediately preceding season.

Not true
everything I have read has indicated that to reach the Super 2 status, he would have had to have been called up by late June or very early July. Calling him up after that would have no impact on anything financially.

From Cot’s contracts:
Super 2
A player with almost 3 years of Major League service time may become eligible for arbitration.
To qualify, a player must:
- have at least 2 years of service, but less than 3, and
- have accumulated at least 86 days of service in the previous year, and
- rank in the top 17% of all 2-year players in service time.
The cutoff point generally falls between 2 years, 128 days of service and 2 years, 140 days.
If Liriano was called up in June, he might have made Super 2. That’s why his agent looked into a grievance. But he doesn’t have a leg to stand on because Liriano was not ready until mid-July.
