Adrian Beltre to the Twins? Joe Christensen says Minnesota has discussed the possibility internally.

No way

I don’t buy it. These are the same guys that talk about soccer, potlucks, and chicken “internally.”

Why is he reporting this

if they haven’t even called the Mariners? Joe C is better than that. I wish he’d start Heath Bell rumors instead.

Unless the Strasburg Hypothesis is correct...

...I don’t know why Seattle would want to trade away one of the precious few players they have that actually contributes to winning. If I was their GM, I would try to drink his agent under the table and get him to sign a contract extension.

That depends on what the Mariners get

If they give up Beltre, and pick up a few decent prospects, it could help them rebuild. Clearly their recent signings have given them some decent, but expensive, talent. Trading Beltre and Bedard could relieve some salary for a year or two, while getting them some good prospects to help out as their other prospects develop.

Say we gave up Slowey/Mulvey/Hughes, or something like that. They save a bunch of money, and we get a real third baseman.

I’m really bad at guessing trade value, so I just threw that out there. What would it really take?

If I was the Mariners' GM, though...

I would probably look at my options on the free agent market and decide that if I could keep Beltre around, then I wouldn’t mind allocating a chunk of my (quite large) payroll to Beltre. I don’t think they need payroll relief so much as they need more talent in the organization, and I think they’d have trouble getting equal talent back for Beltre.

From the Twins’ standpoint, I don’t understand what the point would be of adding Beltre while giving up a ton of cheap seasons from Slowey. The only way a trade for Beltre makes sense to me is if we only trade guys who aren’t going to help us this year or next year, and Slowey is a key part of the rotation this year.
