Bobby Kielty Returns
Joe C. at his Strib blog has reported that the Twins have signed Kielty to a minor-league contract, and that he's been assigned to Rochester.
Welcome back, Mr. Kielty.

Let's get Shannon Stewart too for the hell of it
Is this mainly for the Red Wings to get some right handed help? Or do they actually have hopes of having him in a Twins uniform in 09 as a bench bat?

Rochester is exceptionally short on position player depth.
I imagine that this is to give them two players off the bench instead of one.
Plus, with Monroe gone and Cuddyer out for the season, we have two outfielders who are 22, another who’s 24, and Kubel, who really isn’t much of an outfielder at all these days. If there IS another injury, having a struggling veteran to step into a bench role has some value over calling up another young OF who has little to no MLB experience at all. Especially at this time of year.
But that’s just my 2 cents.

Re: Stewart
Also see: Mike Ryan, Mike Restovich, and of course….DUSTIN MOHR!! Or, as they were called in…’02 I think…Dusty Kielmohr.

For Martin Luther!
I believe Dustan Mohr was the Lutheran Player of the Year in 2002 (my church brought a group to Lutheran Night at the Dome that year). I have no idea whether Mohr is actually Lutheran, or if they just picked someone who was a good guy or looked Scandinavian or something.
Bobby Kielty has a career World Series OPS of 5.000.
There is a Dusty Kielmohr page on Wikipedia.

My dad was at that event as well. He sang the National Anthem.
It’s a small world…
We lived in Montana at the time.

Kielty
was my favorite player when he was a Twin. Remember he was getting regular at-bats for the Sox last year (they won the World Series). He hasn’t developed into a star or even a regular, but he always has been a better RH hitter and the Twins still have a need for that.
My recollection is that the Sox wanted to sign Kielty, but he had an injury to rehab, and then while he was rehabbing one injury, he got another injury (shades of Cuddyer!),
Good luck Bobby! Maybe you can be another Gabe Kappler.

Please tell me he’ll take ABs away from Gomez.

Why did he ever become a switch hitter?
I can’t help but believe he would have a had a successful career if he just stayed a right handed hitter.

Kielty's splits v. LH
A dude on the strib blog just made a good point—something I hadn’t even considered: Kielty has extreme rh/lh splits for a RH hitter. His career OPS against LH pitching is actually .881. In 2006 it was (get this) .965. He obviously did very little last year, but assuming that decline was exaggerated by sample size maybe he’ll get it going at Rochester and actually be able to do some good up here. Obviously he’d be an instant pinch hit against righthander pitchers.

The splits are even odder – he’s a switch hitter, not a righty. He maybe shouldn’t be a switch hitter, given his ineptitude batting lefthanded (a sub-700 OPS), but he does mash lefties.
