Game 119: Yankees @ Twins
New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins, Aug 12, 2008 8:10 PM EDT
Pregame
The Moose, another Twin Killer, the Ageless One, the 8th Wonder of the World Mike Mussina takes the mound tonight. He's having one of his best years as a Yankee, and at age 39, this may be his last opportunity to finally notch a 20-win season. He's reached 19 twice, 18 three times and 17 twice more, but never 20. His strikeout rate has rebounded a bit from last year, his walk rates are the lowest of his illustrious 18-year career, and even his ground-ball rates are up which has helped him minimize the damage in his rougher outings...of which there haven't been many. Mussina's racked up 15 quality starts, 10 of which have come in his last 12 outings. If the Yanks are going to knock back the Twins, tonight would be the night.
On the other hand Nick Blackburn is 2-0 in his last three starts, spanning 20 innings, 19 hits, six strikeouts, three walks and just five runs. In fact, his ERA since July 2nd is just 2.55. On the whole, his peripherals aren't really that much better or worse than Mussina's, even though you could give a slight advantage to each pitcher in different areas. The Twins still have significantly less firepower on paper, however, so Blackburn will need to come up with another gem tonight. Hopefully he's a bit better off than he's been in his first two starts versus New York this season, where he's totaled just six innings (including the 1.2 inning affair on July 21st, the shortest outing of his career).
The (elderly) star-studded Yankee lineup will likely look something like this: Damon (DH), Jeter (SS), Abreu (RF), Rodriguez (3B), Giambi (1B), Nady (LF), Cano (2B), Rodriguez (C), Cabrera (CF)
For the Twins against Mussina The Right-Hander: Span (RF), Punto (2B), Redmond (C), Morneau (1B), Kubel (DH), Young (LF), Buscher (3B), Everett (SS), Gomez (CF)

In Joe C’s blog it says he’s had a stiff neck for awhile now so they’re gonna give him a day or two off. Probably not the worst thing in the world since we’ve got a torrid stretch of games coming up. Redmond is a solid backup so it shouldn’t kill us. Hopefully the other guys pick up the slack tonight.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
Aw, man...
Watching Joe Mauer hit is the best thing about night games.
Joe C
I missed the stiff neck comment. I did catch the 3 of 12 for NBP and 0-11 (i think those are right) for Mauer versus Moose and thought it was because of that. You’re right, a day or two wouldn’t be the worst thing for him…
If that had been the reason for benching Mauer...
... I would have had to give up baseball forever.
Another small point
Good that it’s his neck and not something like sore knees or really anything to do with his legs. Then I’d start worrying about it being something bad.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
Also, he has been battling a severe cold
According to Charley Walters. Considering that he would either get tonight or tomorrow off, and he doesn’t hit Mussina especially well, it seems like the right choice on the face of it.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
BTW, Jesse
If you’re wondering who edited out Mauer and edited in Redmond, that was me.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
Bliss
Ah, the sight of Jeter striking out almost offsets my disappointment after learning that Mauer wasn’t in the lineup.
Gladden
said when Damon hit the homer.
“That is the kind of power that Damon has. He has so much power to the other field.”
What power Gladden? 8 Homers=power???
That was a nice recovery by Blackburn
after the homer and going 3-0 to Jeter, He made some quality pitches after that.
Of course 1 run might be enough for the Yankees tonight.

and now
on the Instant Replay courtesy of Gameday…I hear Bert say that Damon isnt known for his power. Gladden and Bert had better get together and figure out who is right. My money is on Bert.
As much as I sometimes laugh at announcers
I actually pity them having to come up with so much to talk about especially football and baseball since there’s all that downtime to fill with no play by play. I pretty much think I’d sound like an idiot if I had to fill space like that while trying to announce a game.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
Still...
Why talk when all you have to say is that some guy is 1 for 8 against some other guy? Isn’t that much, much worse than silence?
True
but if they left a bunch of dead air they’d probably get fired and to the average baseball fan they think that crap matters. It annoys me sometimes but I’m just saying I’m a bit sympathetic at times.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
His isolated power is right around the median.
So let’s just say everybody’s wrong. About everything.
Span starts out our bottom inning
with a solid single in to LF! Punto is up….alright strategy. Span steals second…Punto bunts him to third. Reddog gets a single to RF…and then Morneau does whatever he can to keep the inning going.
Wrong and wrong
Jinxer, get out of here. j/k
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
Definetely pressing
He’s been swinging at a lot of bad pitches lately because he feels he has to do all the heavy lifting. Which is true actually because nobody else is producing consistently right now.

Blackburn
Perkins did a good job picking his battles last night. You have to do that with this Yankee team because they always are looking to get counts in their favor, and they’re really good at it. If he falls behind some of these guys he can’t be afraid to walk them like Perkins yesterday.

nice turn by Morneau
there. I was just thinking about a DP there! Morneau steps on first and throws it to second to get the FLEET footed Giambi
Beautiful
What a great play, nothing spectacular but what a great way to save the worst hitters for the 3rd inning.

doubt it. with our bullpen
in desperate need of help Gardy will want to keep Bass (although I wouldnt)
Ruiz
I think that is the right answer, unless they go with 11 pitchers for two weeks. They do have a couple of off days, butI bet they send Ruiz down.

Watch out, Nolan Ryan!
Blackburn is only 5,613 K’s short of the record.
I think
Baker and Liriano have a closer shot than Blackburn. Maybe if Blackburn pitched until he was 75 with this kinda of dominance then he could do it! haha
I don't know
Blackburn only needs a measley 208 games with 27 strikeouts to reach that plateau. With 32 starts per season, he could have the record locked down by the year 2015.
Mussina
Maybe since this is their 3rd time facing him this year they’re all starting to figure him out a little bit better. Let’s hope they can keep it up and give Blackburn some more support.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
no need to worry
Everett handles the ground ball and throws him out. SPAN with a nice catch in the corner
Mussina
If moose keeps getting that outside pitch it could be a tough night at the plate. So far though the Twins seem to have handled it well.
Once again
now we don’t have to see him for 8 more batters.

If Blackburn can get them this inning
I see him being able to go 6 innings…with a little offensive help
90 pitches
I’d like to see him get one more partially because I don’t trust our bullpen against the yankees but I doubt they’ll do it now.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
Blackburn
needs to pitch at some of these guys like Molina to get his pitch count down. He’s doing well just needs to keep it in the zone a bit more against the lesser hitters.

I hate the Yankees and their long at bats. Good thing that Perkins gave ‘em a break last night and we have a day off Thursday.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
I was just thinking the same thing
I thought Perk made a good point. The main difference between yesterday and today is Perk was getting weak grounders and they are fouling Blackie off tonight.
Gladden
“and the very dangerous Johnny Damon is up.”
very dangerous? I dont think so…dont give him a cookie to hit but he is far from being named dangerous.
Sometimes
you run into days like this. Blackburn almost certainly will not go more than 5. Too bad, but the bullpen did get rest yesterday, and they have a day off coming on Thursday.

Also, I’m bored. Anyone mind if I post a few more fail pictures. I’ll try to keep them funny, and not sick.

Just in...
Just walked in, no TV, caught up reading through the gameday. I see LNP made all kinds of wonderful contributions tonight. Unfortunately, his double means he’ll probably lead off tomorrow. I see Gomez continues to make deadly accurate throws aplenty. Can the Gomez-in-MLB defenders who constantly extoll his defense continue to do so when Denard Span and his supposed noodle arm continues to make Gomez look like he has no idea where to throw or how to make a proper throw.
(Also, love how dick and bert [gameday highlight] called Everett out for Punto’s error at first. They’re drinking whatever Gardy’s drinking, obviously.)
Gardy totally ignored what Mussina has done to LH hitters throughout his career and especially this year (viz. pitched them like a southpaw) when constructing his lineup. Shocking.
Finally: If you missed it, LEN3 admitted that RICK BARRETT REALLY IS BEING HELD PRISONER IN ROCHESTER. So sordid! Check his blog if you haven’t seen it. He said “somebody” has been complaining about ricky barrett being held down (see his online article about the relievers and my comment calling his comment a shill and a smokescreen) and that there are “reasons he can’t print” why Barrett is still in Rochester.

remember how long it took Pridie to get started in AAA? he is just now picking it up down there.
I think
because Abreu is coming up this inning Gardy is going to stick with Reyes. get Jeter out and he will face Abreu most assuredly. Jeter gets on and I dont think Reyes stays in
Other minor league stuff
Mike McCardell was lights out for Beloit AGAIN.
Anthony Slama actually gave up a run but fanned 3 of the 6 hitters he faced.

Guerrier
Matt needs to go on the disabled list with “shoulder tightness” or “tired arm”, which is probably true. He just can’t get people out right now. I have cut Twins’ mgmt. a lot of slack, but when the deadline came, they needed a reliever and didn’t get one. When two teams are as even as the Twins and ChiSox, a key acquisition can make the difference.

go to the strib. search “rochester might not provide bullpen help” and look at the comments on the august 10th article and you should see mine. that’s not the first time i posted FREE RICKY BARRETT to the strib blogs, but that was the time i directly address LEN3 for not mentioning him.

So long as he’s managing this team will never win a series. This team won in spite of his stupid managing in 2006 and it has done so despite everything this year. But when it counts, teams like these hear Yankees will show you no mercy for your stupidity.
