Game 120: Yankees @ Twins
Pregame
Here we go, this is what the French call Les Rubber Match. With such a frustrating end to last night's contest, the Twins should be focused and ready. It also sounds like Joe Mauer is still questionable for today's game, so I'm sure NBP will be behind the plate once again.
Taking the hill for the Yankees is Darrell Rasner, who's 0-1 versus the Twins already this season in a pair of starts. Neither outing was good nor bad, totaling 11 innings and allowing 12 hits and six runs while notching seven strikeouts and six walks. There isn't anything that Rasner does that's outstanding, he's pretty much a decent run-of-the-mill pitcher who can flesh out the back of a rotation who hasn't had a quality start since June 6. He throws a fastball (86-90), a cut fastball (83-86), a curveball (72-74) and on occasion a changeup (82-84).
Minnesota sends out Kevin Slowey, who was just one out shy of a quality start his last time out versus the Royals. Due to the Twins relying heavily on their bullpen two of the last three nights, Kevin needs to come out and be aggressive, making the Yankees hit the ball. For a flyball pitcher this could be potentiallly dangerous, but with all seven relievers throwing about 15 hours ago the team can't afford to take a nibble-and-hope-they-swing approach. Efficiency and hitting his spots will be key for Slowey today.

at least they moved nicky out of the 2-hole.
also, if that’s accurate, mauer’s neck must not be as sore as they let on. as of this morning he was still doubtful. nice to have him in there, though, this offense needs every bat it can find.
nice to see gomez getting another day off, too.
so what's the record for posts on a day game?
Nice to see Mauer
Ruiz looks like a skilled fat guy which is always a favorite
Glad Harris is getting a start
Could we get a CO so the pen can have a day off?
Win Twins!
as long as 33Morneau is w/ that record will be shattered
by himself
it’s his posting world we just live in it
ha ha
Lets go Twins
I hope Ruiz will have a good game today. Maybe 2-3 with a RBI double? that would be very nice! gets his first extra base hit and first RBI…it would be very nice!
Guess who?
who knows who is pitching the leadoff game for Seattle?
It is our old friend: CARLOS SILVA
and for the Twins it is: FRANCISCO LIRIANO
As a graduate of the University of Washington, I have a lot of friends who are Mariners fans. They all hate for telling them at the beginning of the season that Sliva would be “Decent.” That’s it. I never hyped him up, yet three different people have told me he’s their least favorite Mariner ever.
Threadjack
South Korea beats US in Olympic Baseball. They could’ve used some Span. (and some decent arms in the bullpen)
/threadjack
Gardy could take a note from Girardi
When your #2 hitter is out of the lineup, just move everybody up one spot. Today, due to Jeter’s injury, Abreu’s #2, A-Rod is #3 now. Much smarter than sticking a mediocre hitter in front of your good hitters just to “not upset the lineup.”
Would you make that same argument for A-Rod?
Your best hitters are your best hitters. They should get the most at-bats regardless of whether the spot in the lineup has a nickname or not.
but they do have
Giambi who is a good hitter too. who do we have? Kubel? yeah Kubel is good but no Giambi
What would you rather have
Morneau in the three hole
Or Harris getting more at bats in a game than Mauer or Morneau?
Woo watchin the game at work.

I've stopped using gameday
and actually use yahoo gamechannel + it easy to see how your yahoo fantasy players are doing
Hmm
My television feed must be slow. You posted that before it happened.

Say what you will
about how poor the Yankees are this year… They do NOT swing at pitcher’s pitches. A Rod and Giambi just waited for Slowey to serve up a strike before they swung.
well in all fairness to Slowey
that was a knee high strike that Giambi just golfed…it was a pretty nice pitch by Slowey
Ah, I can't see the play
I’m going by gameday.
It may have been low, but it showed right over the plate.
Either way, it was the best pitch he’d gotten yet. TCB.
Owings
He can’t be named officially until after the season, right? I wasn’t sure if a guy on the ML roster could even be the PTBNL, but I suppose they could “sell” Owings after the season for $5 or something like that.

The Twins have scored 4 or more runs in
something like 10 consecutive games. That is a good thing. One run isn’t going to beat them in the dome. Time to go to work on a mediocre righthander.

Mauer has a sore neck
He probably won’t be very sharp today.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:27 PM EDT reply actions
what do you mean
its Reddog after all. Remember he takes foul balls off the head…gets the blood mopped off his face and stays in the game. He bats even with a broken finger
The key to this game
Morneau has been fighting it for a few days—if he has a good game, the Twins might put some big numbers on the board.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:28 PM EDT reply actions
Morneau
as he takes a called third.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Hey!
Slowey’s not supposed to give up runs in the first. Isn’t this like the first one in 19 starts?
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:30 PM EDT reply actions
Slowey
broke the record on that too. Pasquel (spelling?) was the last Twins pitcher to do it back in 1963.
Lots of fly balls.
But that is typical for Twins pitchers and Slowey in particular.

love that Extra Innings has offered the Home or Away telecast
glad I’m not listening to the NY one
Young w/ a hit
Delmon
Frustrates me as an observer more than any other player. A full 30% of his ABs are horrendous. Then he shows he can take a pitch and hit the ball hard. The young man needs to mature, I know.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:38 PM EDT reply actions
Young
Delmon has hit really well against the Yankees at the Dome.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions
Lol.
He just needs to give you pitch-by-pitch analysis and you’re set.

Buscher
With his questionable glove, less than average power and speed, he needs to hit a minimum of .280 to get platoon time.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:41 PM EDT reply actions
Morneau33
Just wants to be the top poster for today’s game.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:41 PM EDT reply actions
oh that would be nice
but I am just providing play by play and pitch by pitch analysis for Neil…haha
0-1 and a pitch out of the strike zone
and Melky flies out on the third pitch and Slowey is going way too fast for me
Abreu
Has easily been the Yankees best hitter against the Twins. He took away their only lead at the Stadium with a two-run bomb (I was there—it made me sick). If Slowey can get him out and have A-Rod lead off every time, it will be good.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:49 PM EDT reply actions
the reason
why Punto has gone down is that he hit a homer…..he has two homers now so now he thinks he is a power hitter and tries to hit bombs
Please
No sac bunts until the 6th.

No Slow Go-Go!
don’t you know when Punto hits the ball in the air it’s just a pop up?
he should have just gone linebacker on Giambi and knocked the ball out…
good thing Ruiz's pants are not made of corduroy
w/ him running that hard, it would have woken the dead
not really
it was a hit and run and he didnt know where the ball was…..Punto: you are supposed to hit the ball on the ground.
Two base runners wasted
How many more?
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:57 PM EDT reply actions
yup running down the base line
I call bullshit!
you can run two strides outside the baseline but you can’t run down the baseline?
Boo Blue, drop your pants and use your good eye!
he is so going to ban us for calling him out
well maybe me but not the human gameday, i think you’re safe
The Yankees get all the close calls
I used to think it was just anti-Yankee whining. But after the last couple of series, it seems true. How do the Yankees win year after year? Well, the umpired sure don’t hurt them.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
OK, I take that back
They didn’t give Cano the area play.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
It was a bad play on words
And it didn’t help that I misspelled “demon”.
Young
Having a great series vs. the Yankees again!
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions
remember the 3 run homers used to belong to Craigsy Monroe?
well, I think Delmon is beating him out on that
Punto
The punto is a musical genre characteristic from the east of Venezuela, that is interpretated along with the galerón and Fulía at the celebration of the velorios de cruz.
I wonder if it’s played with a banjo?
/bad baseball pun
Punto gets ripped hard when the Twins come to Oakland
everyone jeers him by dropping the “N” in his name
Puto = not a nice thing to be called
Not as bad as it could be
You could replace the “o” with an “ang.”
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
Bummer
Slowey loses Abreu. He came back nice after spotting him a 3-0 count, but walks him on pitch #10…
Slowey
Please keep it in the park for the next three hitters.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 2:44 PM EDT reply actions
Be careful, but don't walk him!
Easier said than done.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 2:47 PM EDT reply actions
in his short career there has been so many wanting to move him to 3B
that I worry about someone messing w/ him like that.
great arm, calls a great game, I’ll be happy to see him C until his 30’s
I suppose
they will only be able to squeeze one more inning out of K-Slow. If ever there was a case for going to 110-120 pitches, it is today. Slowey will have an extra day’s rest before he pitches again and the bullpen has been doused in flammable liquid.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions
New York fans
Will go absolutely crazy—running down two runs with Giambi and Nady coming up. We Twins fans would call Abreu/Girardi idiots.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 2:50 PM EDT reply actions
not exactly the biggest
offensive explosion today with only 4 hits through 5 innings. But one of those hits was a BIG one!
C'mon Justin
Start driving the ball in the left center gap and get hot again.
not really
it wasnt his cookie. Maybe another hitters but Morneau likes the up and in ones…those are his cookies
Yankees
If I’m the Twins and the Yankees bring in one of their lefties, I keep Buscher/Kubel in there. Neither of the Yankee LH relievers have been effective.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 2:54 PM EDT reply actions
Same situation as the 4th
Let’s hope Kubel comes through here, or, at least advances the runners.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 2:56 PM EDT reply actions
Kubel
I think he has gotten a bit too pull and long-ball conscious. He should be hitting more than .263, although the power numbers are good.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 2:58 PM EDT reply actions
The optimist in me
says Delmon does it again and is a hero.
The pessimist wonders if they’ll be able to turn three on the first pitch grounder.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Tell the pessimist
He has 5 hits in the last 24 hours and to shut his trap.
plus tell the pessimist
that it would be really tough to turn a triple play because Delmon is fairly fast…..
Yea, but
Delmon takes a big hack from the right side. He is pretty slow out of the box.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions
sneaky Yankees
our guy can’t find the strike zone so something must be medically wrong
means whoever comes in gets as many warmup pitches as they need
Delmon gets to sit and have a smoke and a pancake while he waits
nice way to avoid having to face Young w/ Mr. Craptastic who was up before
Okay, Whoa.
The mlb radio online must be at least a full minute behind.
And now the gameday is stuck.
Buscher
He usually makes contact, but is a GDP risk.
by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 3:07 PM EDT reply actions
This long half-inning
Is going to make it tough for Slowey, I’m afraid.
