Game 120: Yankees @ Twins

Pregame

Here we go, this is what the French call Les Rubber Match.  With such a frustrating end to last night's contest, the Twins should be focused and ready.  It also sounds like Joe Mauer is still questionable for today's game, so I'm sure NBP will be behind the plate once again.

Taking the hill for the Yankees is Darrell Rasner, who's 0-1 versus the Twins already this season in a pair of starts.  Neither outing was good nor bad, totaling 11 innings and allowing 12 hits and six runs while notching seven strikeouts and six walks.  There isn't anything that Rasner does that's outstanding, he's pretty much a decent run-of-the-mill pitcher who can flesh out the back of a rotation who hasn't had a quality start since June 6.  He throws a fastball (86-90), a cut fastball (83-86), a curveball (72-74) and on occasion a changeup (82-84).

Minnesota sends out Kevin Slowey, who was just one out shy of a quality start his last time out versus the Royals.  Due to the Twins relying heavily on their bullpen two of the last three nights, Kevin needs to come out and be aggressive, making the Yankees hit the ball.  For a flyball pitcher this could be potentiallly dangerous, but with all seven relievers throwing about 15 hours ago the team can't afford to take a nibble-and-hope-they-swing approach.  Efficiency and hitting his spots will be key for Slowey today.

at least they moved nicky out of the 2-hole.

also, if that’s accurate, mauer’s neck must not be as sore as they let on. as of this morning he was still doubtful. nice to have him in there, though, this offense needs every bat it can find.

nice to see gomez getting another day off, too.

by Jesse on Aug 13, 2008 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Confirmed

There it is. As far as personnel goes, this lineup doesn’t look too bad. It’d just be nice if we had Casilla in there.

by Jesse on Aug 13, 2008 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

so what's the record for posts on a day game?

Nice to see Mauer
Ruiz looks like a skilled fat guy which is always a favorite
Glad Harris is getting a start

Could we get a CO so the pen can have a day off?

Win Twins!

Lets go Twins

I hope Ruiz will have a good game today. Maybe 2-3 with a RBI double? that would be very nice! gets his first extra base hit and first RBI…it would be very nice!

this lineup

is stacked with lefties

3 right-handers
1 switch
5 lefties

Guess who?

who knows who is pitching the leadoff game for Seattle?

It is our old friend: CARLOS SILVA
and for the Twins it is: FRANCISCO LIRIANO

by BCTwins on Aug 13, 2008 12:58 PM EDT reply actions

As a graduate of the University of Washington, I have a lot of friends who are Mariners fans. They all hate for telling them at the beginning of the season that Sliva would be “Decent.” That’s it. I never hyped him up, yet three different people have told me he’s their least favorite Mariner ever.

by matty_b on Aug 13, 2008 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

They should re-project their hatred

to their GM for giving Silva such a bloated ridiculous deal.

Gardy could take a note from Girardi

When your #2 hitter is out of the lineup, just move everybody up one spot. Today, due to Jeter’s injury, Abreu’s #2, A-Rod is #3 now. Much smarter than sticking a mediocre hitter in front of your good hitters just to “not upset the lineup.”

by Neil on Aug 13, 2008 1:10 PM EDT reply actions

but Morneau is the best #4 hitter

who bats 4th if we move everybody up one spot?

by BCTwins on Aug 13, 2008 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Would you make that same argument for A-Rod?

Your best hitters are your best hitters. They should get the most at-bats regardless of whether the spot in the lineup has a nickname or not.

by Neil on Aug 13, 2008 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

but they do have

Giambi who is a good hitter too. who do we have? Kubel? yeah Kubel is good but no Giambi

by BCTwins on Aug 13, 2008 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

What would you rather have

Morneau in the three hole
Or Harris getting more at bats in a game than Mauer or Morneau?

Say what you will

about how poor the Yankees are this year… They do NOT swing at pitcher’s pitches. A Rod and Giambi just waited for Slowey to serve up a strike before they swung.

by Neil on Aug 13, 2008 1:18 PM EDT reply actions

well in all fairness to Slowey

that was a knee high strike that Giambi just golfed…it was a pretty nice pitch by Slowey

by BCTwins on Aug 13, 2008 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah, I can't see the play

I’m going by gameday.

It may have been low, but it showed right over the plate.

Either way, it was the best pitch he’d gotten yet. TCB.

I just saw the video of the play

That’s pretty much a perfect hitter’s pitch, it wasn’t that low.

Owings

He can’t be named officially until after the season, right? I wasn’t sure if a guy on the ML roster could even be the PTBNL, but I suppose they could “sell” Owings after the season for $5 or something like that.

by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

The Twins have scored 4 or more runs in

something like 10 consecutive games. That is a good thing. One run isn’t going to beat them in the dome. Time to go to work on a mediocre righthander.

by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:20 PM EDT reply actions

exactly

Slowey just has to stay away from the big bats: A-Rod and Giambi. Dont give them cookies. pretty much everybody else you can throw too but not to those two.

ohhhh

Giambi dropped the throw…..Harris is on

by BCTwins on Aug 13, 2008 1:23 PM EDT reply actions

all Rasner is throwing

right now are fastballs and curveballs.

by BCTwins on Aug 13, 2008 1:25 PM EDT reply actions

Mauer has a sore neck

He probably won’t be very sharp today.

by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:27 PM EDT reply actions

what do you mean

its Reddog after all. Remember he takes foul balls off the head…gets the blood mopped off his face and stays in the game. He bats even with a broken finger

by BCTwins on Aug 13, 2008 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

The key to this game

Morneau has been fighting it for a few days—if he has a good game, the Twins might put some big numbers on the board.

by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

K of Morneau

and Rasner blew our two best hitters away.

by BCTwins on Aug 13, 2008 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

Hey!

Slowey’s not supposed to give up runs in the first. Isn’t this like the first one in 19 starts?

by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:30 PM EDT reply actions

I think

you may be right….hopefully that is the only run he gives up.

by BCTwins on Aug 13, 2008 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Slowey

broke the record on that too. Pasquel (spelling?) was the last Twins pitcher to do it back in 1963.

by BCTwins on Aug 13, 2008 1:32 PM EDT reply actions

7 pitches for Slowey….wow that was fast get us back to the dugout.

Nice work Kev

Let’s get the bats going.

by Neil on Aug 13, 2008 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Lots of fly balls.

But that is typical for Twins pitchers and Slowey in particular.

by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:35 PM EDT reply actions

Delmon

Frustrates me as an observer more than any other player. A full 30% of his ABs are horrendous. Then he shows he can take a pitch and hit the ball hard. The young man needs to mature, I know.

by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:38 PM EDT reply actions

he needs to learn to take coaching

Slowey

by BCTwins on Aug 13, 2008 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Abreu

Has easily been the Yankees best hitter against the Twins. He took away their only lead at the Stadium with a two-run bomb (I was there—it made me sick). If Slowey can get him out and have A-Rod lead off every time, it will be good.

by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 1:49 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed.

Let’s give A-Rod no chances with RISP.

by Neil on Aug 13, 2008 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea, but

Delmon takes a big hack from the right side. He is pretty slow out of the box.

sneaky Yankees

our guy can’t find the strike zone so something must be medically wrong

means whoever comes in gets as many warmup pitches as they need

Delmon gets to sit and have a smoke and a pancake while he waits

nice way to avoid having to face Young w/ Mr. Craptastic who was up before

This long half-inning

Is going to make it tough for Slowey, I’m afraid.

by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Aug 13, 2008 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

Is it

scarier than going to the bullp

by matty_b on Aug 13, 2008 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions
