Bass outrighted to Rochester; Casilla activated from DL

From LEN3 at the Strib: "The Twins have officially activated Alexi Casilla from the 15-day disabled list. To make room for him, the Twins outrighted righthander Brian Bass to Class AAA Rochester.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said he needed an extra bench player with Delmon Young and Adam Everett nursing injuries. So the Twins will try an 11-man staff for awhile, with Gardenhire pointing out that another pitcher, 'is just a phone call away.'"

Casilla for Bass

I honestly think this is the right decision. As with Garrett Jones, the Twins overestimated the value of Bass, their last pitcher. This move will put a bit more pressure on all of the bullpen and the rotation, which will be pushed a bit due to the short start by Liriano.

I really don’t think any other moves will be made. I think Everett can and should get a good number of starts at short and that the platoon of Buscher and Harris will be fine at third—perhaps Punto could be the late-inning defensive replacement at third, since niether Buscher nor Harris is outstanding at third.

I think Bass has been better than board posters here and at the strib and BYTO have said, but it seems that Gardy has lost a good bit of confidence in Bass. He’ll be back in two weeks anyway.

Brian Bass to Me could possibly worked with by the Cliburn Brothers down in Rochester, If he accepts the Assignment which is highly unlikely, i could see him being a september call up.

Assignment

I think he will accept the assignment. If he does he can stay within a familiar system at least for the rest of the season and have a good chance for September callup. If he becomes a FA he might not get signed right away and go idle for a period of time. By accepting the assignment he can make sure he will be playing until next year where he could then try to break camp with the Twins or a different team.

No one claimed him

So he’s looking at shutting it down the rest of the season while looking for another team. So I agree, his best option is to pitch for Rochester and earn his way back, if not for the Twins, for someone else. Plus, it doesn’t look good to other organizations if he rejects his assignment. To me, it says he has an entitlement issue. Guys like Bass are a dime a dozen. Showing a good attitude through this might set him apart from the hundred other sinker/slider pitchers with cup-o-coffee experience.

Not sure about a September call-up. The Twins might see this opportunity to add a catcher to the 40-man roster for September. Their third catcher is out for the year with an ankle injury. So they’ll have to add a catcher. I suppose they could put Morales on the 60-day DL, but they would need to add him to the major league roster first, which means service time and major league salary for a guy who won’t play during that time and who might never catch again. If I were a betting man, I would lay odds that the Twins will use Bass’s roster spot for Butera.

Bass

Was much better as a starter last year in AAA. I’d think he’d to best going back to that and coming back next spring training competing for the 5-spot in the rotation. Otherwise he’d make his services a lot more palatable to other teams.

Gardenhire's major league career: Banjo hitting, futility infielder who couldn't lick it.
Rick Anderson's major league career: Strikethrower who never made it happen with his sub 90's fastball.
Really gives a new definition to living vicariously through other people, don't it?

what 5 spot in the rotation???

As I see it the Twins have this for next season:

1. Baker
2. Blackburn
3. Liriano
4. Slowey
5. Perkins

and you are saying that Bass will compete for a fifth spot after all 5 of those starters have proved that they can win games and pitch well. This doesnt make sense case…..

Injuries and trades happen

I’m saying he’s probably not cut out for relieving, he should go back to starting and who knows what could happen. Could somehow get the 5-spot or he could be traded and become a valuable asset to a rotation.

whats

whats the difference between ‘Outrighting’ a player and ‘Designation For Assingment (DFA)’ ?

by DedicatedFollowerOfFashion on Aug 20, 2008 6:00 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

From Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Designated_for_assignment

Designated for assignment is a contractual term used in Major League Baseball. When a player is designated for assignment, he is immediately removed from the club’s 40-man roster. This gives the club 10 days to decide what to do with the player while freeing up a roster spot for another transaction, if needed. After designating a player for assignment, the club must make one of the following contractual moves:

    * Place the player on waivers (which can only be done within the first 7 days of the 10-day period)
    * Trade the player
    * Release the player
Typically a player is placed on waivers after being designated for assignment for the purpose of outrighting him to one of the club’s minor league teams. A player who is outrighted to the minors is removed from the 40-man roster but is still paid according to the terms of his guaranteed contract. A player can only be outrighted once in his career without his consent. However, a player must clear waivers (that is, no other team may place a waiver claim on the player) to be sent to a minor league team. Also, if the player has five or more full years of major league service, he must give consent to be assigned to the minors. If the player withholds consent, the team must either release him or keep him on the major league roster. In either case, the player must continue to be paid under the terms of his contract.

Why hasn't Mike Lamb been cut?

I personally think that we need 7 guys in the pen, and keeping Mike Lamb up makes no sense at. With Casilla back up, Nick Punto will be on the bench and is certainly more capable of filling in at third than Lamb. I think we should have cut Lamb, and called up Korecky, who could definitely help out the bullpen.

Agree with the 7 guys in the pen part...

I definitely agree with the premise that it would make more sense to not short the pen. Its rough enough for the guys out there with Bass in the mix (as crappy as the outings are).

But given the stated logic behind the move (need extra infielders to cope w/ injuries), wouldn’t it make more sense to send Ruiz back down until 9/1? The guy has been hitting in the short term (355/412/419/831, 31 ABs), but if bench flexibility is so important you remove an arm from an already overtaxed pen, wouldn’t he be the logical choice?

It is possible one of the afore mentioned injuries requires some kind of time on the DL, so the move is made because they think they’ll need Casilla before they need the extra arm. Who knows.

"Until 9/1"
But given the stated logic behind the move (need extra infielders to cope w/ injuries), wouldn’t it make more sense to send Ruiz back down until 9/1?

When I think about it, sending Bass down does seem to make more sense, looking ahead a bit more than that. Playoff rosters are set August 31, and while you’re allowed some flexibility to account for players on the DL, I believe the pitcher/position player numbers have to stay the same. There’s not much need for a 12-man pitching staff in the postseason – you need the extra position players for potential World Series games in an NL park, and teams usually use a 3- or 4-man rotation, making one starter into an extra long reliever. Of course, there’s also the fact that if you’re using your bullpen to the point that you need 12 pitchers, you probably aren’t having a long stay in the playoffs anyway.

The problem with

DFA’ing Lamb is that they owe him 3+ million for next season. If they cut him, they have to pay it. I’m sure they are hoping to be able to unload at least part of it in the off-season.

For those not scoring at home -

Beardboy’s August OBP is .529. He has 5 RBI in his past 19 ABs, which have been scarce, making it even better, and he’s batting .316 in his past 10 games. It’s not $3 million worth of output, but it’s way good enough to keep a spot on the roster.

Granted it is Carl's money

but given where the salaries are at this year in comparison to last (and presumably next), is the 3 million really that big of a deal if it could make the difference between making the playoffs and not? And yes, I realize I answered my own question in the subject line.

Veteran lefty bat off the bench who can play two positions in a pinch

In some ways, Lamb is an ideal bench guy, in the mold of Jim Dwyer, Randy Bush, and Chip Hale.

Looks like -

Boofster’s 2.8 August ERA swung that deal. And he had to puke against Seattle for the ERA to get that high. One more Twins’ pitcher who now hates Raul Ibanez, or Bill Smith for not working a deal for Raul.

Pretty much the whole time we've had him

That’s what I’ve been thinking, except for the 2nd half of 06 when he had me thinking he could be a legitimate starter.

But as long as he can keep the walks down, and his fastball at the knees his stuff is hard to hit.
