Vulnerable Angels?: Keys to the Series

While the Angels still have the only winning road record among the American League contenders, there last road trip wasn't so impressive.  In Cleveland they won only 1 out of 3 games and in Tampa they did the same.  However, had it not been for some late heroics from the streaking Garret Anderson, they were in danger of being swept by the AL East leading Rays.  One of the noticeable differences between the their last 6 games is how many runs they have scored.  At the All-Star break the Angels made a surprise move to trade for Atlanta slugger Mark Texiera, in a move that was supposed to patch up their last remaining weakness.  Still, the offense might be reverting back to it's previous ways.  After scoring an average of 6.6 runs in 24 games since the break, the Angels have scored more than 4 just once in their last six.  The Angels are still by all means probably the best team in the league and will continue to ride their stellar pitching and the always solid defense.  This of course is the same formula the Twins are said to be committed to be following, but certainly less evident this 2008 season.

Keys to the series:

1. Continue to keep their offense at bay.  In my mind their sluggers Mark Teixeira, Vladimir Guerrero and Torii Hunter are going to do what they do.  The best strategy is to keep their smaller fish off the base paths.  Hunter and Guerrero can be beaten and we certainly did a decent job in the opening series, however don't let Teixeira beat you (hopefully we learned from Manny in Boston and Ibanez in Seattle).

2. Attack their pitching early.  The Angels have arguably the best rotation in the majors right now even without Kelvim Escobar.  For some reason or another our current offense does well against right-handers with hard fastballs and good curves (see Justin Verlander, Ben Sheets, Josh Beckett and John Lackey).  They'll set a good precedent by going after Lackey early.  Joe Saunders was physically banged up in his last start and though Jon Garland got us good earlier this year, we've had good success versus him in the past.  As far as Ervin Santana goes, that might be more up to Kevin Slowey than the offense.

3. Big start for Scott Baker.  Scott Baker has had several opportunities to solidify himself as the teams ace going into the stretch run and certainly going into 2009.  However he's fallen short as off late.  A solid 7+ inning start from him would go a long way towards taking the reigns of the rotation.

4. Continue to limit bullpen workload.  The bullpen has been taxed lately and now there a man shorter than they were a day ago.  Albeit not the biggest loss, but there's not a whole lot of help if a starter can't get into the 6th inning.  For Glen Perkins that might mean breaking out the curve the 3rd time through the order to give them another look, for Nick Blackburn that means continuing to mix all the pitches and for Slowey that means attacking the bottom half of the zone.

5.  Keep pouring on the offense.  Nick Punto had a really bad stretch there but has hit well in his last couple of games.  With Alexi Casilla back that means Punto will go back to the 8-hole and hopefully provide some depth to the lineup.  Punto's better on the field but Brendan Harris has been both good and clutch in August at the dish so we'll see who gets the bulk of the playing time.  Also, the other development to watch will be the Delmon Young.  How hurt is he and did that play into his terrible showing against the A's?  Either way we could use his bat.

6. Who's the hero?  The Twins will certainly need some magic to squeak out some road wins against the best team in the league.  The Twins are a unique team because really, every man counts and every guy in this lineup has taken turns coming up with big hits.  Who's turn is it?

The Angels are heading into an 11 game home stand where they’ll face the Twins, A’s and Rangers. They currently have a 15.5 game lead within their division and they already have a 20-13 record versus divisional opponents. The Angels could be a little laid back coming into this series knowing whatever happens they can come back and pound the hopeless A’s and Rangers to still have a successful home stand.

Angels series

My prediction: Harris won’t start at short as long as the trio of Punto, Casilla, and Everett are healthy. He might get a start at third in place of Buscher, but he won’t start at short.

So the playing time at short will be divided between Everett and Punto.

As far as the Angel series—pitching and defense. The Twins can’t give the Angels four outs and the pitchers need to throw well. Runs won’t be plentiful.

Again?

What is it now? That same bum shoulder, or did he come down with leprosy or something this time?

hit by a foul ball I think

but I didn’t realize it was that serious

Not serious

X-rays were negative. He’s not going on the DL unless the Twins really need pitching. He’s not playing because he’s not as good as Punto, at least in Gardy’s estimation. Maybe Gardy will work him in against a lefty during the road trip just to keep him fresh. But he’s a bench guy at this point.

Everett’s in the lineup tonight anyway, so he must not be too hurt…

Probably right

I like his bat a lot lately, a lot of clutch singles and doubles. But you’re right, Punto will probably play at least 3 of 4 games. It’s always kind of fun to introduce variables though I guess. If I were managing I’d consider having Harris start at least 1 game at short, maybe when Baker or Slowey is pitching because they’re much more reliant on fly-ball outs anyways. Then he’ll likely get the start at 3rd for Saunders tomorrow. My thoughts aside, the likely lineup for 3 of the 4 games this series (depending on Delmon’s health):

Span RF
Casilla 2B
Mauer C
Morneau 1B
Kubel DH
Young LF
Buscher 3B
Punto SS
Gomez CF

Hopefully Gardy will be smart though and mix it up well versus Saunders, including having Redmond catch because we’ll need all our lefties and Mauer on Sunday versus the dominating Santana.

Mauer and Morneau

again these two have to be strong as always. If they go, then the whole lineup goes. Even if the rest of the lineup goes 8-23 but Mauer and Morneau combine to go 0-8 that takes a lot of spark out of the lineup.

Pitching staff has to hold the Angels to a maximum of four runs. If they can do that, thats all we can ask of them. Also they starting pitchers have to go 7 innings minimum.

Defense once again plays a big role. We must be solid everywhere in the field.

Most of all, let the offense keep rolling up those runs. We need all the runs we can get facing a very tough Angels staff. Lets go get em!

This is good work.

I haven’t looked much into what LA’s starting pitchers have to offer specifically, but I do know that they are very, very good. And we all know how unreliable our boys have been on the road this year.

We need a couple of really strong pitching performances this weekend, and a couple of unexpected heroes to take up a bat or two. This has the potential to be a messy weekend, but if the Twins can take this series it’ll be a massive coup.

Thanks for help with formatting

I’m still working on that, the article looks a lot better now. Thanks!

I'm less worried about the players

Than I am about all us fans! Think of the work productivity that’s going to be lost for the next 10 days while we stay up every night until 1:00 am!

I kid, of course. But wow. We’re going to have some sleepy Twins fans around here.. I know I want to watch every pitch of this Angels series.

Oops!!!

I guess I overlooked something. The normal course of action would be to load the lineup with lefties tonight but that could actually backfire. Lackey versus right-handed hitters this season: .296/.355/.505. Lackey versus left-handed hitters this season: .192/.238/.310. I looked into it further because that’s kind of strange and like the season Mauer is having versus lefthanded pitchers, this is a bit of a statistical anomaly for Lackey’s career. Let’s hope he reverts back to the mean tonight because I doubt Gardy has any stat gurus on his staff telling him these things…

Oh good the feelings mutual then

Gardy is hi-freakin-larious, so much so that I find myself punting my hat in the air every other game!

No.

I was joking. While I’m sure someone from the organization has seen and is aware of our site, I doubt we’re much more than a curiosity. And if they do, they have a completely different perspective on this kind of thing than we do. From their angle, they’d be reading the work of someone who’s writing about their job. Sure, public opinion matters because their jobs are a bit more public than, say, someone who works as an insurance administrator, but I think it’d still be odd to log on and see so much mass and public reaction to your work.

It intrigues me really.

Great stuff

This is front-page worthy, if you ask me. : )

As to that last question, my vote goes to Brendan Harris. And Kirby Pucket’s spirit.

Oh, my bad. I don't have a wheel-thing.

Actually, I don’t have a mouse. I have a big wart between the ‘g’, ‘h’, and ‘b’ keys that I maneuver.
