JoeC Reports on Line-up for AFL
JoeC just updated his blog with the group the Twins will be sending to the AFL below:
Pitchers Jeff Manship, Rob Delaney, Tim Lahey and Anthony Slama, infielder Steve Tolleson and outfielder Dustin Martin.
The only one I don't understand is Lahey. He was just picked up this year and has seemed to struggle. I would have expected Duensing instead. I am excited to see how Delaney and Slama do against a high level of competition since we will need the next wave of strong bullpen arms shortly.

Lahey
He’s older than the rest, but looked like he was going to make the Cubs in March. I half-assed expected him up here sometime this year when everyone broke camp, but he didn’t seem to keep it together very well. I would imagine the Twins have a last-chance hope for him.

Luke Hughes
Personally, I would have sent him there… Oh well.

Hughes is going to play in winter ball
so that way he can work on third base.

Lahey was drafted...
…by the Twins in the 2004 draft. He was a catcher taken out of Princeton University. The Twins converted Tim to a pitcher/short reliever a few years ago. He has been very good, so good that the Twins almost lost him this spring when he was selected in last fall’s Rule V draft. He was returned when the Twins wouldn’t agree to a deal and has pitched well for Rochester. Unfortunately, as is the case for most short relievers, a few bad outings can really make your numbers look bad.

Wasn't he also tabbed as a future closer at some point?
I thought I recall reading that a couple years ago, but I could be mistaken…

Lahey wasn't drafted in the Rule 5 last year for nothing.
The Twins have three reliever prospects who look really good.

Valencia?
I guess they decided to send Tolleson instead. I would have tabbed Vanelncia. Oh well.

Lahey
He hasn’t had an ERA below 3.4 since rookie ball and teams are hitting .360 on him in the 2nd half. Doesn’t seem like much of an upside to me.

Why release Bonser and Crain?
Bonser has pitched very well and Crain is in his first year back from surgery, so his breaking stuff isn’t as sharp. He’ll be fine next year. You don’t just throw away assets.
